Lol, yeah. I'm not trying to derail the thread. It's just one more time out of many that I've given up looking at pics that I wanted to see. There are still a lot of us here with slower connections.
The exact subject of this post was sold at a TCNC auction in 2013. I consigned it to them for $6500. I have an inquiry in with them to learn the actual realized price. It was an honor to consign this uber rare coin+clock for a friend.
Wow!! => that coin-clock rocks, brother!! (congrats) ... ummm, if you ever want to unload that baby, please give me a PM (thanks man) Cheers
I don't understand. It looks like a regular 50 cent piece. Did they not mint 50 cent pieces in 2000? What makes it different, besides being in a clock? I'd put it up on ebay, starting bid 4,999 dollars (if it sells usually for 7 k
"Yes" => there were 573,000 fifty cent pieces minted in 2000 using 100% Nickel ... ... but in 1999 the mint started testing 50 cent pieces made from a steel core and merely plated with nickel and copper (there were only a few test pieces made, so these are very rare) ... and then in 2000 they made fewer than 276 more of these test pieces, but had them made into those cool clocks ... ... I got that sweet info from my Charlton Catalogue
I'm not positive, but I think only 25 or so of the clocks were manufactured and had the coin placed inside. Making the combination clock + coin excedingly rare.
=> you're correct about the "P" (the "P" fifty cent pieces were only minted from 1999 through 2006, but the 2000P's were definitely the uber-rare year!) ... I have a 1999P twenty-five cent piece (it was only issued for testing and is relatively rare for a modern coin ... but it is merely worth $20-$75, not worth $6000-$8000 like the 2000P fifty cent pieces) ... yup, the 2000P watch is certainly a very cool numismatic item (thanks for posting the photos)
