Though the 2001P was not initially released into circulation and was eventually sold by the mint like an NIFC. They are tougher to find then the 2001D, even where I live just 1.5 hours from philly. In fact, I found a 2001S proof in a box of halves and still haven't found a 2001P
I found this little guy at work in the register at work one night. I don't know if it came from a roll or if a customer spent it. It's a 1976-S (bicentennial) 40% silver business strike quarter. I keep every bicentennial quarter that I find, and I saw this one and put it back. Later on I was looking at it and something looked "funny" about it. I looked at the edge and didn't see a copper core. I took some pictures and posted it here and sure enough, it is a business strike 40% silver bicentennial quarter. I didn't even know they existed until I found this one. This is the only year that 40% quarters were ever minted. I've made some great circulation finds, but this one is one of my very favorites.
Did you take it to a jeweler to have it weighed? I just found one of these today. What else did you learn about this coin?
I get rolls of halves and dollars just to spend them. (Of course I check for silver in the halves, but I'm not searching and dumping.) I have seen so many NIFC-date halves, I have a hard time believing that some aren't getting out through regular circulation channels. I certainly don't see them becoming more valuable. So I save a choice example or two, spend the rest as planned. NIFC dollar designs are often seen too. So far I'm filling my small dollar album entirely from circulation.
That lesson being "US morality laws are sometimes pretty stupid, but they'll land you in the same jail as the sensible laws."
