I'm having a hard time grasping the idea of someone so foolish to buy a coin, that is identical to nearly all its counterparts, which was randomly selected out of a stock pile of identical coins. The very same coin sold for roughly $5000.00 the day before, and roughly $1250.00 minutes before that. So I compiled some coins that were sold for around $100,000.00 1795 $5 Large Eagle MS62 PCGS. Breen-6422, BD-14, High R.6.... 1799 $1 7x6 Stars MS64 PCGS 1795 $1 Draped Bust, Centered MS64 NGC.... 1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling MS65 NGC.... And now the 2014 Gold Kennedy You can even buy a new Porsche for a 100K Its simply mind blowing to me.
That 1885 Morgan proof is possibly the most stunning coin I have ever seen. The last one...not so much.
The Kennedy does not deserve to be in that class, nor do several other 100K coins. I will never understand the top pop or condition rarity sale numbers. In many instances, the single finest will be worth hundreds of times more than the grade below. This, in my mind at least, is paying for the holder more than the coin.
Here's how the conversation went down.... Dealer: I have the very first Kennedy coin released in Chicago. Buyer: oh yeah? How much do you want for it? Dealer: I don't know....I'm thinking maybe 500,000 dollars. Buyer: I'm thinking how about 100 thousand. Dealer: SOLD!
I've seen that 85 and frankly, the images do it no justice. It looks like it were minted yesterday and with the care and craftsmanship of the mint of back in the day. I would have to go with the 1799 though, that one is undergraded in my opinion. Honestly I'm surprised that it didn't get the SP designation simply because of the remarkable strike quality and lack of major contact marks.
Of those I'd have a real hard time between the 1795 gold the draped bust dollar and the 1799 draped bust dollar all 3 are amazing and so is the oak tree too the Morgan is pretty but I love that early stuff the best!
Hugh, Mainebill, that's your price range, right? which of those coins are yours? do I get a discount if I buy two LOL
Lol I wish!! I would if I could! Maybe if I sold 90% of my collection I could!! I'm very comfortable with 1-2k coins but $100k I just don't have!!
