You are on the ball... the thread was started six minutes before the email arrived! ;)

As for the coin itself, I cannot say that I disagree, but it is one of those take them as they come kind of things; a spectacular coin nonetheless.

Hit's or not , I'll take it . One of 2 , like Books said it is what it is and you take it as they come .

Pretty bag beaten but still rare great if you collect that but I'd spend that dough on something more eye appealing. That 1797 ms 65 half at ha comes quickly to mind!!

Does make you wonder how a one of two struck pattern like that acquired the bad contact marks. (And how did the 1849 double eagle in the Smithsonian get it's bad obv scratch?_

It does unless this one mistakenly got in a bag of regular double eagles is why it survived

My understanding is that it's not a pattern. They were issued for circulation by the Philly mint, but quickly discontinued because the dies were slightly too large for the planchets. There are more of the S-mint coins because San Fransisco didn't get the word on their discontinuation till later. As far as the marks go, well...it got tossed around in a bag during a few bullion transfers, as with most large gold issues.
