Lovely set Geek. I keep good records of all my coins, but I don't take it to our level! If you start charting in 3D with shading, I'll know you went completely over the edge...lol and j/k.

I too am putting together a type set. My goals are different in some ways, but similar in others. For those types I don't love, I'll buy them in either XF or AU. The others, I'll get in the highest MS grade I feel comfortable spending. And like you, there are coins on the set that are beyond my imaginable spend at this time.

Great right up, great set and I look forward to your newest acquisitions!

So apparently the Coronet Large Cent is really two major coin Types, not one. I had it down as 1816-1839 (one slot), but while consulting my Red Book today, it makes sense to add a new slot in my Type set since there are two distinct designs:

    Coronet Head Cent
    Matron Head: 1816-1835
    Matron Head Modified: 1835-1839.

Very clearly different designs, so I wonder why they are often lumped together in Type Sets? Why separate out the earlier Classic Head Cent, as that also looks similar, but not the Modified Matron Cent?

Can someone smart explain this to me? @Tom B ?

Thanks. I plan on updating this thread often, even with my daily thoughts regardinf this set.

I keep thinking my Type Set is "Set in stone", and everyday I add new rows as I learn more, or change the Start / End dates, or add things like Hawaii Coinage, Confederate Coinage, Tokens, Medals, etc. Always something new to be on the hunt for.

It may depend on whether you are assembling a Basic Major Type Set (any example of the coin in the series; i.e any Washington Quarter ) or a Type Set with some type of variety/change (in the case above: Washington Quarters - Silver, clad, Statehood)

I love the changes this design goes through and imagine the chatter as the mint trolls see the new heads. Going from "frumpy" to "silly". Great coin series and they are all on my type list.

I love reading your threads. The passion is obvious and is off the charts while the information contained is worth reading for virtually every level of collector who might visit these boards. You are a great asset to CT.

About 6 days to go until a bunch of coins close on StacksBowers. Up until yesterday, I was the highest bidder on 5 Trade Dollars and 2 seated quarters. Well someone came through and smoked 6 of my bids in one fell swoop. I picked the coin I like the most and went over retail pricing with another bid, and I was immediately outbid.

Looks like I want be getting a CAC trade dollar from SB this week.... Just as well, I don't have the money, LOL.

The 20C arrive yesterday, looks great besides the scratched up slab. The $1 seated arrived today (I think), will know when I get home from work.

Will be selling my Proof Kennedy Accent Hair in the coming months which I want to use the proceeds to pay down some credit card debt from my 10th wedding anniversary, and maybe buy a special CAC coin for my Type Set.

    My current most-wanted list:

    Trade Dollar
    Draped Bust Half
    Draped Bust Quarter
    Indian Head Cents (nickel)
1873 25C Territorial and Fractional Gold

The 1872 $1 SILVER DOLLAR - SEATED LIBERTY, MOTTO NGC G4 CAC arrived yesterday and I freaking LOVE it.

If you asked me 12 months ago if I could ever love a G4 I would have laughed you right off CoinTalk. :hilarious:

I am amazed by this thread, I am huge type collector myself and I get where you moved on from your Kennedy's. I just get bored by collecting the same coin over and over. I do want to reassemble a Franklin half set (to date this is still the only set I have ever completed unless you count the Statehood quarter set) in MS63 or higher again, I sold my previous one more than a decade ago. I mean I love buffalo's or standing liberty quarters or walking liberty halves but I know if I got into a set like those I'd quickly grown bored. So I am always looking for a type set I can do (I just started a world bullion versus crowns set) and I am building 20th century type sets for my boys that I use downgrades from my 7070 to build quite often.

I love your use of excel I just started loading all my excel spreadsheets on my phone instead of the 10 different want or have lists I used to keep in my wallet. I can pull of my excel spreadsheet on my phone and see what i need real quick.

You are my inspiration. Everyone has how they like to collect personally I love albums others love slabs (someone might get mad at me if they know I just broke out a MS70 Brittania coin for my crowns versus modern word bullion album and that I am planning on breaking out an armenian noahs ark ms 70). You collect what makes you happy and how it makes you happy,

I was away on a trip to Moosehead Lake, Maine this weekend with my High School friends. Just about my idea of Paradise. Food, reading, swimming, blueberry picking, beer, Magic the Gathering.

    Thoughts on ANA Newps

I expect a lot of nice coins to start flooding dealer sites after the ANA show. I eagerly await @Tom B advanced email list on the off-chance there is something for me, even though I have no money, LOL.

    Thoughts on eBay Watch List

At any given time, I usually have 20 coins "saved/watched" in my eBay wish-list. These are coins I need, and ones I am debating purchasing as funds are available (like when I sell a coin).

Sometimes I watch an eBay coin I want, but the BIN price is way too high. I do some research if its been sitting around a long time, and then make an email offer even when a dealer is NOT accepting best-offers. Almost always they reply, with either a yes /no / counter-offer. There is one particular dealer who would always just straight-up ignore my emails, so I stopped sending offers.

Sometimes, I watch a coin just to see how the bidding evolves so I can get a sense of what a particular Type coin in a certain grade goes for.

Generally every coin I watch is CAC'd. Many times I know these dealers and ultimately buy direct on their site, but eBay is where is see the coin first. Its just that I am on eBay all the time, and going through my list of 50+ dealer sites takes a lot longer.

    Thoughts on StacksBowers Website

SB's site is getting worse, not better, according to people I speak with. The last 6 months have been a roller-coaster for their site: Horrible>Bad>Better>Bad Again.

I am seeing more and more people voice this frustration and not just on CT, other forums like the CAC boards, and in-person.

At the upside, people are getting deals because not everyone can access the site (phones again), and some people don't want to bother to wait a year for a page to load, and others like me grit and bear the trouble, but bugs abound and there is a real lack of advanced search and filters.

At this point, SB should just pay HA $100,000 and license their site, LOL.

    Thoughts on CAC
It seems to me and many fellow CAC advocates, its betting harder and harder to find CAC coins at non-CAC coin prices (normal prices). Meaning, CAC is becoming more popular and even people who might not love CAC have realized that there is a premium for these coins on the BUY and SELL side of the equation. You might look at it slightly differently and say that the dreck (coins that failed to sticker) might be going for cheaper and cheaper, thereby making the stickered coins seem to command a premium. Obviously a ton of nice coins have never even been to CAC, but on a $5000+ TPG coin, you've got to wonder every time you see a coin that's naked (no sticker). Did it fail, or has it just not made the trip in.

    Thoughts on HA

I got blown out of the water on all my bids at HA again, no surprise since I am bidding on CAC only coins, and "normal" / low retail prices. Many of my friends also got blown out, but the difference is they had aggressive bids. Coin market seems very healthy to me.

    Thoughts on Security
I am having some major neighbor-issues, which involve lawyers and police. I decided to finally get my collection out of the home and into a safe-deposit box. This was a sad decision for me, as I like to be close to my coins and look at them whenever I want, or redo a photograph for the millionth time. Now I need to take a trip to the bank each time. On the upside, the bank is close and I'm friendly with the bankers and their hours are good. Obviously the coins are safer now than in the ghetto I live in. I mean Maine is great, but my town is going to the dogs. :mask:

    Thoughts on Summer
I am picking up my kids from summer camp today, which means that summer is drawing to a close and we need to start thinking about back-to-school. My wife and I are suddenly interested in Private / Charter schools for our boys. I went to public school and loved it and got a lot from it. But recently we have been noticing our town getting worse, not better. I talked to some old HS teachers of mine, and I guess our school system has gone WAY down since I was there 15 years ago. Time to get out while the getting-is-good.

    Thoughts on Hyphens
You may notice I use of a lot of hyphens (-). Its true, I like them. Get over it. :p http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyphen

My wife and I both went to public schools and we both ended up with Ivy League educations and earned PhD degrees. However, we also sent our daughters to private (Catholic) school even though neither of us is Catholic. They learn about more than academics, they learn about community and compassion in an academic setting and we have noticed that the parents of their classmates are, in general, more involved with their children's lives and schooling than what we had seen in our local public schools.

By the way, that was an excellent move getting the safe deposit box.

You can use hyphens all you want, but PLEASE don't start writing like Laura Sperber. I saw "dreck" slipped into your post. Ugh.

On the plus side, at least you know the difference between "then" and "than" and between "your" and "you're." :D

Got outbid at SB on: 1873-S Liberty Seated Quarter. Arrows. NGC VF25 CAC.

I guess its for the best. Sometimes I feel RELIEVED to be outbid, this is one of those cases.

Trying to sell a coin so that I can pay down some debt and buy one special item for my CAC Type Set. Might be awhile before I buy another coin.

My HR 1921 Peace should be arriving at CAC in next day or so. Fingers majorly crossed that one gets stickered. Probably the last un-stickered coin I will be sending in for a long time, as I am mostly buying them pre-CAC'd. I sent in 24 coins on Tuesday.

The seated stuff is a little overwhelming, so I will be saving those varieties / Types for the future.

Nothing new really happening on the coin front. Trying to get to a show with @mainer020648 and @Mainebill before the year is out.

I still need to call JA on a few things, sorry @gijoe76.

I like having my coins at home why I bought a safe I like out in the country tho and my neighbor keeps a pretty close eye and his best friend is the local sheriff. When I'm home I have plenty of security and I doubt I'd run outta ammo ;) I thought the auctions were tough especially ha anything good and original was tough to buy cac or no as was anything with good color. Still managed 7 coins total myself and might have bought more but stacks bowers site completely crashed last night and I couldn't access nothing. Me I barely finished high school did ok when I went but frequently took time off especially cause I could work and make money.

    Random thoughts:

Nothing much happening on the coin front for me, just biding my time until I sell a coin or two so I can pay for the next type coin. I have my eye on a nice Indian Head Cent I need.

Not sure why the last of my coins for sale don't seem to sell, most don't even get offers.... oh well. I think until I get done with a home refi and a little neighborhood squabble, no coins for me. At least I get to take some pics of Marcels coins and Bills coins. And I currently have a batch at CAC. With results expected late next week, oh boy!

I bid on a bunch at HA this week, but probably won't win anything, seems that coins are going higher and higher, well all except the ones I'm selling, LOL.

One good thing about the gold Kennedy debacle, it certainly livened things up around here for a week.
