Difficulty spotting fake Morgans 1897 S looks suspicious

Discussion in 'US Coins Forum' started by NoLincolnCents, Aug 9, 2014.

  1. I may only post a few more times after this before taking a rest. I'm nearly finished going through my grandfather's collection. It could just be my eyesight, but the Morgan dollar on the top came from his collection. The mint mark looks like it is high and tilted left, and not in the correct position(hand punched?) The bottom photo is from CCForums and someone else's since that was the biggest image I could find for comparison. Sorry about the adds in the first photo. Using an app as a magnifying glass on my phone.

Hard to say with just a small part of a coin. If you can swing some full images, I'm sure you will get your answer.

  4. Hang on.

  5. Full pictures of my coin.

  6. Credit goes to CCForums for these two. Like I said, biggest pictures to do a comparison.

weight would tell us some, do magnets stick?
looks like an average 97S in VF35 to, (pushing it.) XF 45

You can't just go by mintmark position. There were quite a few reverse dies used on the '97S and all of them would have a different position.
I don't see anything suspicious that your coin is a fake.

Nothing even remotely strikes me about your coin as being questionable.
