It's a 1991. The missing 1 is because thatpart of the die was clogged with debris when the coin was struck. It's called a 'filled die'.

It's funny to me that some coins with missing design elements are valueless while others are famous and expensive. The 1937 three leg and the 1922 plain are prime examples, but are the result of over polished dies as opposed to a grease filled die.

very true, once i saw this penny i thought it must have been rare, (given the fact its the first i have seen, ever,). but certain qualities on some coins ditinguish the value. but thanks for that bit of info learning new things everyday.

I know this is 5 years since this penny was posted, but I had to comment because I just found 2 of those pennies yesterday and was baffled as to why they were like that!

I got a lot to learn. And I'm appreciating the education. But there are a lot of legit questions concerning related scenarios about other coins that were worth a lot now all the sudden a grease filled or damaged coin is no longer considered a variety mint error

    Damage is damage..
Grease filled I actually refer to it as Debris Filled but they have to be extremely dramatic to be considered as a better of the known Mint Errors. It is a Mint Error called a Struck Through Debris.
    Here is a thread I created -

Grease or debris filled Die caused that. It's common but nice to have one. Start your own thread so as not to Hijack someone else's.
