I just struck silver at the Coin Counting Machine!

I was trying to make a quick run to the grocery store a few minutes ago and happened to be passing the bread isle when I heard that special clink, clink, clink of silver. If sharks can smell blood from miles away, then I'm convinced that coin collectors can hear silver from far, far away! :)

By the time I got there, the boys (Around age 19 - 20) had already dumped most of their change into the machine. The only ones left by the time I got my cart over there were 40% Kennedy's (1965 - 1969) and one lonely 1953-S quarter that has an odd looking mint mark. I haven't had time to research any of them yet, but did weigh them. Many look to be uncirculated. To make the situation funnier, the guys offered to sell me $18.25 worth of coins for $16 since the cashier told them that she couldn't accept 50 cent pieces. I couldn't do that though and paid the full price. One of the kids said that he found the bag under his bed and had been given them as a kid. He couldn't have cared less about them.

Lesson learned - Don't gift coins to kids unless you put a warning sign on the bag! I'm just bummed that I didn't get there 5 minutes earlier to scoop up the other quarters.

I don't normally collect Kennedy's, so feel free to volunteer any specialties that I should be on the lookout for.

With Kennedy half dollars, in a bag like that, you're mostly going to be looking for silver. Nice to be there at the right time, right place!

Thanks, they're all 1965 - 69... Does that automatically mean silver or am I looking for the S mint marks on these? I was just about to look up the answer, but if you want to save me a few min, I'd be appreciative.... :)

The quarter is a nice pretty '53 - S that looks to have a doubled mint mark of some sort.

any half dated 1965 through 1970 is 40% silver.

mint marks have no bearing on if a coin is silver or not...

Thanks for the info, I was probably mixing it up with the bicentennial quarters or some other coin from the late 60's/early 70's that had one special year where an S mint mark was needed.

So, either way...even if no errors are found, I made out pretty well! FREE GROCERIES! :)
