You are right in general sir. I was referring more specifically to the ANA labeled coins, the ones the people in Chicago are waiting for so they can have a special ANA convention slab. Its the slab they are after, not the coin, (which to me is sad in and of itself, but anothe rstory).
I don't know about a big demand for these. The waiting room on the mint's web site disappeared between 2 and 3 o'clock today.
Wow so much happening in one day hard to know where to start! Like a few before me have said, while demand appears to be pretty good I'd like to see just how many get returned once these get shipped out and into peoples hands. It is sad but I too believe more people are after the label then the coin now. I'll probably order 2 of these tonight for the stash and hopefully one day they will be worth a million bucks! If I was at the show and stood in that line, the label would be a badge of honor, but paying someone moon money basically for a label that says it was one of the first sold is not worth 3x the money, that's just dumb. I am definitely looking forward to the silver set but I understand they will be releasing those at some show as well so more of the same then...
my theory here is that the us mint is making all of these gold commemoratives so that they can sell their gold way above spot price. Then use the cash to buy more gold. This is their best bet if we don't have any gold at fort knox and germany wants their gold by 2020.
You think so? I'd be pissed if they were losing money on every coin. We dont need more Govt. agency losing money.

Just got back from ANA (6 hour drive). Line was a nightmare. Got there at 5:30 and barely made the cut. I will post full details later, but tried buying up to 6 from hired individuals, who all signed contracts. I offered up to $500 over price of coin, and no one took it (their contracts paid about $170 first day coins, $250 for later days, since dealer had to pay early bird badge for them). I was planning on grading at show, but a dealer was offering $3,000 on the spot, so my Dad and I both took it (I got him to do $3,050.) It was insane... I also have some pictures I might add after a nap.. haha.
Will post more info later, but here are a few pics. Again, we got here at 5:30 and only made the cut because about 50 asian looking people got kicked out ffor either cutting line, not having credentials, or cheating (marking hands to show in top 500). A bunch of the locally hired street looking guys were about to start a fight with them, and the police kicked them all out. My Dad and I both sold for $3,000 each on the spot. Too good to pass up, even though the original plan was to grade.
WOW It looks like DC Denver & Philly u s mint gift shops are going to be a madhouse all week long does anybody know the sales totals so far ? http://www.philly.com/philly/news/Philly_mint_mobbed_by_JFK_coin_seekers.html 3K Each Cha Ching
They should make each of them sign a sworn statement that they are not being paid to stand in line, and the purchase is from their own money. Such crap from greedy dealers ruins the hobby for everyone. Short of the mint smarting up, the only response the hobby should have is to boycott all of these coins. I for one promise to never buy one. YOU ARE 100 PERCENT CORRECT! EXACTLY HOW I FEEL. I AM A DISABLED VET AND I HEARD ABOUT ALL THE DEALERS PAYING PEOPLE TO WAIT IN LINE. THE SHOW IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR THE PEOPLE NOT THE DEALERS. I HAD AND NO ONE WHO IS HANDICAPPED HAD NO CHANCE TO GET A COIN. IT'S SAD ENOUGH TO GET RUN OVER BY NORMAL TRAFFIC AT THE SHOW. I AM BOYCOTTING THIS COIN AND WILL NOT RETURN TO THE FUTURE ANA SHOWS. LAST SHOW I HAD A DEALER PUT A STOP PAYMENT ON SILVER HE BOUGHT OFF ME AND NO ONE AT THE ANA(CHAIN OF COMMAND GAVE A RATS ASS. THERE IS ENOUGH CORRUPTION WITH THE POLITICIANS,I DON'T NEED TO SEE IT FOR MY HOBBY AS WELL.

Your seeing capitalism at work for it's worse. If it makes a profit, don't worry about the consequences.
More reasons I'm glad I'm not there, especially considering the boom and bust of the HOF coins. PT Barnum had it right!
The show is for the dealers as well. Would you attend an ANA show that didn't allow dealers to attend? Pretty empty bourse floor. On the other hand it would be a lot cheaper for the ANA, wouldn't need a convention center. You could hold the entire ANA convention in a hotel banquet room. And most if not all of the people being paid to stand in line would happily go ahead and sign the statement. Then turn the coin over to the dealer and collect their payment.
Doesn't anyone else think this practice is analagous to the USPS printing different stamps every month to get every dollar a stamp collector had available to spend? Look where that took stamp collecting as a hobby . . . down the tube. Frankly, I think that minting expressly for collectors sort of defeats the notion that something will end up being rare. The long term demand for an item will almost certainly never outstrip the near term, hype-driven demand for the same item. These contrived rarities are all destined to flop eventually . . . now a 1990 No S Proof Lincoln, on the other hand . . . THAT'S A RARITY!
If they wanted everyone to have a fair chance to aquire one of these wy didn't they put us all in a waiting room with a time limit via skype we show our DL and face and that's it mintages would be high
