Browsing the web I found an 1883-CC (MS-64) in an ANACS slab I had never seen before today. I looked it up on SampleSlabs.com and found it is the ANACS 1 type slab used from 1989 into 1990 about one year more or less. How rare is this style ANACS slab and is there a premium for them above the value of the coin encapsulated within it? It looks like it is not one to crack out and resubmit. Perhaps a trip to CAC? All opinions are welcome. It is in a non eBay auction and if it is worth going after then I'll submit a bid for it.
Nice coin. I've seen these slabs a few times and I don't believe they add any significant premium. And CAC only accepts PCGS/NGC graded coins.
What Savy said. I have a couple of coins in those early ANA/ANACS slabs and I will keep them in there. I don't think my coins would upgrade and your Morgan wouldn't either. CAC won't accept them.
Here's my opinion of CAC: Honestly I couldn't see it being worth it to waste my money for putting a silly sticker on a slab. One thing if the sticker was dated when an inspection of the coin was made. If CAC, Eagle Eye or any of these dumb wannabe coin service companies were worth anything they would certify all coin slabs, not just PCGS and NGC. I mean why not open the market? They could show how good they are and then make more profits. I wish this silliness that only PCGS and NGC's grades count would be reconsidered. It's just sheeple herd mentality people who believe this load of nonsense. My opinion is CAC and Eagle Eye produce nice looking stickers and that's it. I could do what they do too if people want to throw their money down the toilet. Getting back to the main post. I have a decent Roosevelt Dime ANA Sample slab too. I think that's a nice Morgan Dollar sample slab with the reverse toning. I'd pay some extra for it as I think it has potential to appreciate in value. Here's a Sample slab I bought a couple of days off Ebay. Paid $40 for it, can't wait to receive it. It looks like a great find and a really clean looking specimen and Sample slab:
I agree that CAC should sticker any slab , heck even SGS . If the coin is solid or high end for the grade who cares what slab it's in . Sticker it . But IMHO CAC and the big two are in cahoots .
1. Only pcgs/ngc coins are graded with anything that resembles consistency. They would lose some market credibility if they started stickering slabs like segs. 2. The very last time that sample coin traded on eBay was in June for less then $20. Why are you claiming to have spent $40? Match up the serial number on the slab you showed to the one below. If somehow the coin just didn't pop up on the eBay search below maybe you will be kind enough to post the buy page from your account so we can see. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=washington half 1982 ngc&LH_Sold=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&LH_Complete=1&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xwashington 1982 ngc.TRS0&_nkw=washington 1982 ngc&_sacat=0
It is not a sample slab. If you look at sampleslabs.com you will see the Anacs type one has the word "sample" written on it.
As I had said this Morgan dollar is in an ANACS Type 1 slab not in an ANACS Type 1 sample slab. If it were an actual sample slab then it would be quite rare as according to SampleSlabs.com there are no known ANACS sample slabs of this type with a coin larger in denomination than a quarter. It is known with a Lincoln cent, Roosevelt dime and a Washington quarter
In my opinion it hurts their credibility that they DON'T sticker other slabs. The CAC sticker is supposed to to mean that they agree that the coin is SOLID for the grade on the holder. So they can tell if a MS-65 is solid for the grade if it is in a PCGS or and NGC holder, but they can't tell if it is a solid 65 if it is in someone elses holder? That doesn't make sense to me. If it isn't a solid 65 the slab doesn't get the sticker. If it IS solid for the 65 grade why shouldn't it be recognized as such? Or aren't they willing to put their opinion/reputation on the line?
John Albanese co-founded PCGS and was the founder of NGC and from my understanding he got fed up with the inconsistency of the grading at both of those services so he founded CAC. The purpose of CAC was to review those two services' grading opinions as an attempt to get more consistency in their grading. A lot of collectors and dealers have no respect for CAC because there is a perception of favoritism toward those two grading services. I agree with Conder101 that CAC will greatly improve their credibility if they adopt a policy of reviewing all of the professional grading services. By doing so it will put pressure on the so-called lower tier grading services to improve their grading consistency and ultimately will be a benefit to the hobby in general.
It would be all well and good if CAC would sticker coins from other TPG's than the big 2, but remember that the sticker is an offer from JA to buy that coin at a competitive price for distribution through his network of dealers. Slabs from other than the big 2 are simply not liquid and often regarded as no better than raw. It may not be "fair" but it is a fact of the market.
Beautiful MS 64 I don't care about green beans unless I am selling. I would reholder that Tpg history before Beans came along . CAC not a big fan of 3 party grading Wings too Red one the name I can recall .
1. I beg to differ that "only PCGS and NGC coins are graded with anything that resembles consistency." My eyes have seen otherwise, am not psychotic and no my vision is still pretty good, even for an old fart of 35 years. 2. I understand where you're coming from with price comparison however you need to realize the coin I purchased is superior to the one that sold for $20. Compare the pictures and you will see it's a no brainer.
You're right. I assumed it was a Sample based on the original post. I needed to read it more thoroughly.
This is a ANACS small white holder used for about one year, in 1989, untill AMOS Press bought the ANACS side of the ANA. At this time there is very little premium for the holder, the price is based on the coin. The 83-CC Morgan carries the whole price tag but a 67 SMS dime in this holder will be priced about double the price of the coin. These are listed on eBay as 1st generation holders. I have been working on a type set of these holders, here are a couple of my old thresds I have posted lots of pictures in all the different holders I have found; http://purelynumismatics.com/Thread-ANACS-Small-White-Holders and one more at ngc; http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=7386237&fpart=1 Both threads have lots of comments.
Okay, but in that case what is a CAC sticker worth in the marketplace based on those terms? To me not much.
