http://www.ebay.com/itm/1853-PCGS-P...84?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item233a14f088 This isn't my coin but I was intrigued when I came across it while browsing completed auctions. Is there really a market premium on lowball certified coins? I'm not sure if I would fork over 60 bucks for a coin in Poor condition that is worth no more than $20 in Good. However, it is probably quite uncommon for a coin to survive so much circulation and not have anything else wrong with it other than wear. I wonder if TPG's are more lenient with damage and other problems for coins in Poor condition, or if they would assign a grade of "P01 Details". I also wonder what criteria CAC uses to accept or reject a coin in P01. How could something graded that low be "nice for the grade"? By the way, I noticed that when you expand the PCGS price guide to show all the grades for Morgan dollars it actually has a column for P01 and the prices in it are higher than for G04...
I bought that wreath cent when I was first getting serious again a few years ago was one of the first things I ever bought off ha I sent it in to cac recent cause why not and they beaned it only basil state coin I ever seen with a bean!
Only 400 of these have survived in all grades per Coin Facts. I like the slanted 55 and the big S mintmark.
I ask this out of ignorance: Some of the lower graded coins have rim nicks and other problems. But they were deemed slab-grade worthy and not "body-bagged." If one had an AU-problem coin that was "body-bagged slabbed" (with a rim nick or artificial toning, for example), would it be better to break the coin out, circulate it a little and get it slab-graded, but obviously with a lower grade? Thanks in advance, guy
Bah.... that is silver... try collecting a lowball series struck in pure nickel. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/canadian-nickel-dollar-lowball-coins.218778/
PR 1 BN. It's an $870 coin without the registry bump, right? I wonder if it would clear $1200 at the right auction.
I'd sure be happy if it did I got just shy of the first number in it is kinda cool having such a lowball in my collection as most of my coins are much higher grade. I want to upgrade it eventually tho
This is one of thirteen PCGS or NGC AU-50 graded coins in my collection. AU-50 is the lowest grade I have in a TPG holder.
I think it would depend on the coin - but in most cases I would say no. It would take a lot of wear to get rid if a rim nick - rim bumps are there to say. And who is to say what is hiding under that artificial toning. I would say just get rid of the coin and get a problem free example - if they are affordable. Just my humble opinion.
