    I agree, 1886.

    M = 1000
    CM= 900
    D = 500
    CD = 400
    C = 100
    XC = 90
    L = 50
    XL= 40
    X = 10
    IX = 9
    V = 5
    IV = 4
    I = 1

    So, mdccclxxxvi = 1886

    this is a gothic florin, mintage 591,773 a lower mintage--the godless florins are dated 1849 and do not have dei gratia (by the grace of god ) in the legend

    i dont get it,i understand the first part MDCCCL 1850 BUT THE LAST BIT I DONT GET IIIVi its not xxxvi

    It IS xxxvi. Look close, the i on the end is not the same as the x's before the v. They don't mix capital and lower case letters.

    What wyvern was saying is that your coin is not a godless coin as you stated in your original post.

    Well thanks very much for your help, i'm a lot wiser now, but they 've got a funny way of writing xxx's, and yes i should have said gothic,thanks again for putting me wise, JACKO 75
