Another terrible PCGS submission

The only coin in the group that I would unequivocally put in a genuine holder based on those pictures is the SLQ. The toning just isn't right. As to the "cleaned" rejects, I don't see how one can make that call from these photos. You have to look at the coins with a point source light (single bulb LED, Tensor, halogen etc) to see the hairlines. The person doing the grading "in hand" is the only one able to do that.
To my eyes the half that graded AU50 has been dipped, and was a silent "net grade" from 53-55.
Higher grade mint state coins have to "earn" a higher grade, largely based on luster. This does not translate well into static photos.
Grading is subjective in the extreme, and graders are human. A coin is graded in the context of the ones that came before it, like it or not, that is how the human mind works. Thus the chat boards are full of stories about coins that graded higher or lower on resubmissions, green beaned on a second try, and on and on. And, it's the hope of a higher grade that keeps people re-submitting the same coins over and over, driving up the TPG profits. It's all a game and those who have learned how the game operates have profited overall (this writer not included).

torontokuba Thread Crapper & Hijacker, TP please.

Like any company with shareholders, profit and company image first and the customer's perspective comes as a distant second. At least one of the TPG services is a publicly traded company, right?

Too bad for the bad experience, and as others here who have had a bad experience like yours, in the future I would run the coins by sharp dealer submitters beforehand, who are at shows or coin shops, which is what I do. I do see problems and AT on the rejected coins. I would ask not just what is present on a given coin, but what is missing? Luster should be pervasive on any high AU or MS coin, even XF coins should have luster in the protected areas.

Why haven't PCGS and NGC provided free online videos on grading standards, on what submitters and collectors should look for before spending their hard earned money? That should be a given in 2014, there certainly isn't any shortage of money made by the grading services since the 1980s.

There is also an option with ICG, after I get a result with them Skip Fazzari will go over with me what grade all the graders assigned with internal notes. Plus they will do conservation for free, and on their economy option of $10 a coin, downside is limited. The two leading services charge around $20 for economy submissions per coin which is a lot of money for what they actually do. Unless you have high value coins submissions should be done reluctantly with strict business sense. I don't know hardly any coin shop that does a grading submission unless they have one where they will make $$.

Wow. Normally I hate toning and I'm not a fan of SLQ's, but the 1920 is FANTASTIC. I think it's the coolest looking coin I have EVER seen. Mesmerizing!

One problem with a thread like this is attempting to see the coin with a single set of images off a computer monitor in the way that the TPG saw the coins in-hand. Regardless, my first reaction to the SLQ was "AT all the way" and I stand by that firmly. The JFK is interesting in that I do not recall ever seeing those colors lay on a silver coin like that, but they do appear on clad after storage in Dansco albums.
