I have not sold directly to CAC, but I have recently talked with them about it. You just let them know which coins you would sell, and JA tells one of the ladies what he would pay, and they send you an email or call. I thought there was a generic "buy" list with a monthly price for every coin they would buy, but they have told me this is NOT the case. Still not sure if that is true, it may be something they hold close to the chest. Geek, Greek, hey punk, whatever name works for you.
Thank you for the kind words! It's amazing what can be done in Excel, I really think it's one of the best pieces of software of all time. Most people barely scratch the surface of its features. I highly recommend taking a class, buying a book, or watching online videos. You can use it in every aspect of life.
wow amazing you have been very through and detailed.. might I borrow the master list you have created to help build my types set??
A Look at Coin Value in My Type Set Some of my coins are VERY cheap, some are closer to my ceiling price of $350.00. It's not that I just bought the first coin that I saw, but it's more about I bought an example I like at a price I could afford at the time. A good example is my Mercury Dime. I have a very plain looking 1938 FB example that retails for $80.00. It's nothing amazing, but it's a great example of the "type". At the time, I wanted to save my funds for some really special older circulated coins that would be harder to replace than a blast-white dime. This dime will suit me just fine for many years, and I'm NOT looking for any "upgrades", but once my set is 99%+ complete, I will look into circling back on a few coins. Some of my coins are probably "meh" to you, and some are probably "wow". That is by design. I can't afford "wow" on every type, so I buy what I like and what I can afford. This set will keep me plenty busy for years to come, and I'm in no rush to just fill holes. It's more that in some cases, $80 is all I want to spend on the Type and in other cases, it needs to be $350 to have the coin I want. He is a breakdown of the retail values of my coins, so you can get an idea on the spread. Maybe your collection is similar with some unique "money" coins, and some cheap "toaster" coins (everyone has one). I was hoping for a Bell Curve. As you can see, I seem to find representative types most frequently at the $60 and $140 price points. But I have a wide spread.
Certainly. Some other members have asked as well. I created a "blank" version you can download to your PC. CLICK ME HERE
So today, I worked on my Type Set Excel spreadsheet which also acts as my Want List. I expanded the following into their denominations: Colonial Coinage Hawaii Coinage Bullion Coinage Confederate Coinage I don't know a ton about these types of coins, but I think I got the basic Types added and this will server to do further research. I added around 25 rows / slots so for example once I broke the former generic "colonial coinage" down into denominations I replaced 1 row with many rows. My Type Set now has 209 slots!! That link is continuously updated as I get more info, for instance, tonight I will price out the colonial coinage, and many of them will go from a status of "NEED" to a status of "TOO COSTLY". Thanks for checking my thread out, Matt
Beautiful set GP and great write up. I know you will get those expensive coins someday. I love all your charts and spreadsheets lol.
I always thought a type set should include some more modern varities as well. Like: Westward journey nickels 40% silver Kennedy 2009 Lincoln set etc..
THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!!! I think you've assembled beautiful coins for your set, and given excellent advice for anybody thinking of doing a US coin type set. It's a very positive article, and I love your coins!!
Question Geek, On your sold list all coins were designated as slabbed coins. Did you originally buy them slabbed or did you buy some raw and send them in for grading yourself ? Dave
I bought most of them slabbed, BUT around 10 or so were bought raw in the late 80's when I was a boy, and submitted to NGC and then CAC by yours truly. I dont think I have ever sold a raw coin on eBay. I sold 1 raw coin that was in a ANI basement slab. Most of the coins marked as CAC were submitted to CAC by me. Matt
Well, I went through the list and changed a few "NEED" coins to "TOO COSTLY". I was basing my prices on a theoretical G4 CAC, but in some cases, there was never been a G4 graded and stickered by CAC, meaning it was improbable that I would find one. So in F12 grades these $400 G4 coins become $1000 coins, and out of my range. Here is the breakdown of my STATUS column on my Type List: STATUSCOUNTAT CAC1MAYBE10SKIP15HAVE58NEED58TOO COSTLY74TOTAL216So, of 216 coins, I need exactly as many as I have, 58 coins. Too bad there are 74 coins that I may never be able to afford. That is a big chunk of my US Type Set.
@brg5658 got me thinking about Medals and Tokens and the like. In 2012 @Detecto started an exonumia thread, and its been one of the most popular threads here on CT ever since. It was a natural place for me to check into Maine themed non-coins. I did manage to find one "so-called dollar" token, with two types as show on so-calleddollars.com. HA seems to have only sold a single example, and it was in a details slab. If anyone has info on this coin, I would love to know more, such as availability and historical pricing. It may very well need to fall under the "TOO COSTLY" category, but I am hoping not. There is a current auction I am watching, but I am unsure about the pricing on these.
Got the camera out and took some slab shots of recent purchases. In this case of the gold dollar below, I only have seller closeups, no full slab shot at all. Love those Fattys. Gold CAC sticker. The half dollar already had decent slab shorts from GC. Here are mine. The reverse rim ding in unfortunate, but I saw if before I bid. Still a fantastic lookin coin with a "Skin" that is completely different from my other Seated Halves.
Nice Type Set! I really enjoyed seeing it, and even more reading about your methodology for collecting the type set. I also want to give a shout out to your spreadsheets in all their "geekyness", for me half the fun is in setting the goal, and then tracking the progress. Well done sir!
