I remember that one...I knew someone was going to get nailed, but I didn't expect it to be $6500. Wow.
It has to do that with both cases, you're inconsiderately giving questionable advice to possibly impressionable members seeking informed help. While I could not care less if you agree with me, suggesting this gentleman, for whatever reason, go out of his way to verify the obvious, factual, and easily confirmable does nothing to help him or anyone else who may happen upon this thread searching for sound advice, and this really is no different from the lauding of a bottom-dwelling TPG, while regularly reminding us that you sell them, in the hopes that someone might take you seriously and put a little money in your pocket. As for SEGS, and regardless of the lame claims to the contrary, they are indeed a questionable service and you well know it; this is simply part of your MO. Please, Mila... in another recent thread you patted yourself on the back for making "handsome profits" from selling coins (not SEGS) housed in a holder you openly admitted (and underestimated IMO) that "90% of their coins are graded totally wrong", so based on this alone, do you really think we, especially those of us who have first-hand experience with SEGS, should take such generic claims seriously? If you want to peddle junk as gems on the bay, all the power to you, but at least have the decency to respect the less experienced members on this board, particularly those who are here wanting to learn, by not making them wade through nonsense.
BooksB4Coins: Maybe the person's camera is distorting the coin's details? Probably not but it should be considered. BooksB4Coins & LostDutchman: Both of you say SEGS is a crap TPG and your example of that 1797 AU-55 Dollar thread makes a good case. They should definitely have caught that however let's not forget PCGS made a huge blunder too believing a fake Chain Cent was the real deal and slabbed it. What does that tell you? At least this was a real coin SEGS goofed on. Even the experts get fooled every now and then and that's not surprising to me based on the exhausting volume of specimens they deal with daily. I'd like to see any of you folks grade 100-1000 coins a day and not slip up on one or two! That's something you ought to ponder.
It looks like you also agree with the grades on all the ANI slabs you are selling. You should be able to tell that they are not Gem grade coins but you call them that in your listings. You are not being helpful when you pass out false information.
This is what I mean: instead of taking a few moments to familiarize yourself with the type/date/mint in question, you're trying to weasel in a way that could allow the OP to hold out hope for something that isn't going to happen. Do you really think there is even a remote chance that at least three solid identifiers were somehow distorted, including magically correcting/removing obvious doubling? I have not once said that "SEGS is crap", so please do not put words into my mouth. What I have said, and on numerous occasions, is that SEGS is QUESTIONABLE while openly admitting that I very much like their holder, and have even had a few good experiences with (and getting decent and deserving material out of) them. As for the rest of this, the issue is not "slip[ing] up on one or two" coins, but doing so on many, and doing it repeatedly. If I remember correctly (and if wrong, hopefully someone who knows will set me straight) SEGS started out as a decent service, but likely caved to the demands of bulk submitters and/or the temptation of unwarranted leniency, but no matter the cause, the fact is that there is simply too much questionable material residing in their holders for your desired points to be taken very seriously. Beyond this, and for the sake of fairness, I don't think that any of us would question your opinion/views as we do if it were not for the obvious ulterior motive hiding behind them. You can't pretend to be one thing in one thread, and in another be someone altogether different and expect no one to notice. You also cannot expect the membership to sit idly by while misinformation, particularly with the potential to do harm to novice collectors, is spread for the sole purpose of putting money into one person's pocket.
What you accuse SEGS of is no different than what PCGS has been doing over the years, collusion between dealers and auction houses to get more business and a higher selling price at the expense of lower quality coins for the collector. But as the expression goes "cheaters never win" because people (even the slow ones) eventually catch on that they're being duped.
That is not true...and you have no evidence to support that statement. PCGS is not colluding with anyone, they have spent decades establishing themselves as one of the only two trusted TPGs by not doing this.
You expect me to believe that? How naïve do you think I could be? I remember when PCGS had unbelievably tough standards grading coins, but now it gets worse and worse. At one time a high graded coin by them really meant something that it was a truly amazing specimen, but not anymore. Coins graded 70 are as common as red onions in your grocery store.
I find it fascinating that you point out their loosening standards yet fail to see that SEGS standards are far looser and less consistent. It is true, PCGS standards have loosened over the last few decades. However, this has been driven by the consumers (the collectors) desire to have "higher grades." The market has changed in that time and PCGS has changed with it. They have remained HIGHLY RESPECTED. SEGS is not. No serious/respected dealer or collector respects the opinion of SEGS.
So tell me... if "cheaters never win", does this mean that you're losing and all the bragging of profit was only for show? You're right about people eventually realizing that they've been duped, and this will surely happen with the people overpaying for fluffed up junk in equally junk holders. When this happens, there are two possibilities... the first is that they view it as a lesson learned while moving on, and the second is that they realize how many schmoes are out there trying to separate them from their money and leave the hobby. If you didn't know this before, now you do, so if you've one drop of respect for the hobby and/or the people involved, hopefully you'll stop doing your best to damage it. As for PCGS, it is a business and is in business to make money, but what matters is the end product, and what PCGS has provided their customers over the years is simply of more value than SGS, ANI, or SEGS. It's pitifully ironic that you're sitting here hurling mud at a certain company while refusing to acknowledge the truth behind why you supposedly prefer bottom feeders. I will not deny that standards have changed, but so goes life and junk by any other name is still junk... unless it's in a basement holder on your ebay account, in which case it's apparently gem.
