I have a Kennedy half dollar coin that looks like a bottle cap. The front is 2000 D Kennedy with edge but no slug it's like a cap. The coin is missing the body. what I have is the front and sides/edge but not the main slug. would you call this a coin? and have anyone out there seen a coin separated like that or is it possible ? I found this in a 500.00 coin box wrap with other old Kennedy coins. Note: The front and edge is in great condition. but don't know what ever happen to the rest of the coin.
It sounds like the first step in making a magician's (two-headed) coin. You mill one coin out like the one you have, then mill the revers and edge off another one, then fasten them together.
I will have to take pictures tomorrow. I seen the magician's coins. but this one looks different. like the real thing. you are right have to get photo up so you can take a look at it. will try and get them posted
That actually looks precisely like one half of a magician's coin. It's just missing the inset for the other face.
I have never seen anything like it before!! Sure is a unique find even if it isn't worth much !! I would put it aside!!
Actually this is a magicians coin, but probably not part of a set. She'll coins like this comes in two flavors. The more expensive kind are paired with several cutdown and remilled halves. The more common type is called an expanded shell and fits over a normal coin.
You can buy these easily enough as they are readily available for all who would like one. Do a google search on Magicians Coin or Spy Coin. The trick is in finding one in the wild. I expect that the op's coin was spent or deposited as half dollar and then somewhere along the was, it got dropped and fell apart. The "insert" side will, no doubt, show up in someone's coin roll search and they'll pop on here wanting to know what kind of "error" they found. Which is ok.
