Is this 1964 Kennedy an "Accent Hair" Variety?

  3. It might be Accent Hair, but if NGC doesn't think so, who cares?

I would cross it over to PCGS and notate the Accented Hair Variety. I believe that's a major variety, so they'll attribute it for free.

Yeah, I asked them (NGC) that. I basically was told to do "No Tier: Service: VarietyPlus" Which in theory costs $15 but in reality cost $44 plus probably $20 in shipping to NGC.

So, I may be able to save $5 and do re-holder, but I am not sure going against what they said would be smart. I really need to find some other coins to reholder, crossover, or raw to ride along for the ride and justify the costs.

This is a possibility but I am not a member. I am looking into a local dealer who can submit for me. I currently prefer PCGS, but in the past I preferred NGC and thus I am a member there.

That sounds like something Dave Lange would say who does the variety attributions for NGC (sort of like "Job Security" but not necessarily the correct answer).

It might be worth the effort to give customer service a call and ask them what the options are.

I once had a coin fall out of the four prongs and NGC customer service gave me in invoice number to submit the coin and they took care of it, it only cost me to pay postage to NGC and NGC took care of the rest. I realize that your situation is a little different but it is still their mistake of not labeling it an “Accented Hair”.

Well after years of waiting, I finally am sending this coin back to NGC to get the designation added to the holder. I was worried it would not re-holder in grade, but NGC has assured me that it will not downgrade or at least that their guarantee will hold. I talked with them on the phone today, but who knows?

Anyhow, I had listed this on eBay a few days ago at $900 and had some very serious offers, but ultimately there is just too much risk for a buyer without the variety on the holder. Believe it or not, this coin now goes for $1200-$2000 on Heritage. I pulled the auction and sent notes to the interested parties saying I would reholder myself to minimize the risk to buyer AND seller.

So, to get this one coin re-holdered cost me $64 so far, not counting me shipping this Registered Mail to NGC tomorrow.

$15 for Variety Plus (includes re-holder)
$15 for NGC imaging (I'll get to see how good / bad this service is)
$8.00 handling (I think this is a BS charge, but whatever)
$26.00 for USPS shipping back to me
    _____
    $64.00 + $26 RM = $90.00 for this one coin.

Still worth it, since in theory this will be a $1500+ coin.

I will keep you all posted, especially about the Photos and if it keeps the Cameo and 68 grade, I was told via phone call with NGC today.

The OPs coin is definitely an AH Kennedy.
I recently found an AH Kennedy and sent it to NGC.
NGC does not charge extra for this variety attribution, and supposedly attribute this variety automatically, but they do suggest that you note it on the submission form so that they don't miss it.
Definitely send it in if you haven't already.
Call ahead to ask them if they'll re-holder with the variety listed. You might pay a little less if they will.

    Congrats! Nice pick!

I picked up an 1808 bust half NGC XF40 on ebay one time with poor pictures for $330, so I decided to take the gamble. Turned out to be an 1808/7!

It is Definitly a AH but I am curious on the Cameo idea. I just do not see it in your pictures. Can you please post another one that would show the cameo. If you look at my avatar, it too is a AH and Cameo but not worth $750 or even close. What am I missing here?

This picture was to show the detail, and not the cameo effect. I do admit that this coin does not have the strongest of cameos, but there is something flashy about it.

You make a great point though! I never uploaded all the image versions...

Nope if that is your coin, and it appears to be a AH and already graded Pr68, you have a very expensive coin there. Here is what Numismedia has for it:

    $1190 - Wow what a find!

I found this one and it is Cameo but folks here graded it at Pr64/65. Big difference in price.

I would still send it in to be graded, IMHO. If it comes back PF66/67 you may be pleasantly surprised.

I might someday but I would rather the grading fee be spent elsewhere. After reading about the inconsistency I will wait and maybe do it through ANACS. I will not be selling these anytime soon.

Those glamour shots of the whole coin point out something I don't care for about slabbed coins. A beautiful coin in great shape sitting behind scratched, cloudy plastic. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate what the grading does for the coins and collecting. Maybe the slabs should be synthetic sapphire or something.
