I imagine that the subpoena is asking for contact information for certain members if the contact information has been stored.

Typically, folks will create accounts solely to disparage or attack some other individual. Either by name of avatar.

The folks that do this rarely submit contact information for who they "really" are and 99 out of a 100 times, use email addresses that are tied to fictitious names and/or entities.

As far as I know, any folks that posted to the Shepherd threads were expressing opinions based upon what they have read on the internet and how they "perceived" the situation.

It certainly did not look good for either party but their were no 1st hand accounts.

So, since the ANA is "Chartered by Congress", do you think that they think folks cannot talk about them? The Boy Scouts of America might offer their insights.

Maybe I missed this in earlier post, but are there legal cost for Peter just for minding his own business?

So far just time, stress and aggravation.

That's plenty right there. It's also has the same affect on they family, even though they are not directly involved.

I read both threads that Doug linked. Nothing appeared libelous.

But were questionable posts deleted? On pg.3 of Greenie's thread, LindeDad posted "Someone needs to think before they make posts on the internet." The next post is from Ikeigwin saying "Wow. That's pretty libelous. I realize you preface it with "while I have no evidence" but that doesn't make it okay to invent a wild scenario that disparages the man. If I were you I'd edit that post before someone else does a "reply with quote". I didn't see anything that would evoke those two replies, so is that what Mr. Shepherd is interested in?

You can say anything you want on the internet. But if your words are libelous or interfere with someone's business relationships you can be sued.

They could want members for a lot of reasons. Sure, they could be included in a lawsuit if they said something negative...or they could simply be given an order to make a deposition. There are a lot of things they could want.

If you want to know more about how all of this works do a little research on the ASA Accugrade lawsuits. That cost a lot of people a lot of money. And all because they voiced their opinions on the internet.

People, it's pretty simple, what you say on the internet, can have consequences.

This is absolutely true. Once it's put online...there is always a record and it's in writing.

I didn't realize your "organization", as Larry falsely states, was part of the cause "eroding the ANA's membership," Peter. I always assumed it was the political ineptness and mockery of a century's old organization known as the ANA itself, that was eroding membership. I know I'd rather pay for a triple root canal, without a numbing agent, than pay dues to that sloppy excuse of a numismatic organization. Maybe he can sue himself for not doing his job.

I sure wouldn't. I had a root canal, with anistetic, however it didn't work. Dentist started drilling hit the nerve, I jumped out of the chair in the worst pain I ever felt. I almost decked him..

I uh, thought that this was Laura Sperber's mantra? Wanting to do away with coin forums and all due to the misery they cause. (her).

Well she's right about a couple of things, you can't accurately grade coins by looking at pictures. And they (coin forums) are full of a lot of bad information. Of course there is a lot of good information too, but you have to be able to know one from the other.

Get two competing dealers to agree on a grade.

Better yet, get a coin dealer to agree with the TPG's assessment of the grade.

The point being, everybody has a different opinion except for obvious grade limiting hits/dings/scratches. These coins get called on the carpet all the time.

It appears that Laura is employing the "Agent Orange" or "Napalm" method of addressing problems in the Coin World of the Internet.

Oh I understand your point and there is no doubt that Laura is, shall we say, "vociferous" at times and about certain subjects. But I find that I happen to agree with her on a lot of things she talks about, especially the TPGs. And she is far, far, from the being the only person in a similar position as hers to to share those opinions.

But if no one ever speaks out - what then ? But that takes us off track from the subject at hand so I'll drop it here.

I'm a big fan of hers. I joined the ANA originally so I could vote for her. (I later realized there are several other great reasons to join). We need big mouth agitators like her to keep this hobby going in the right direction. she shines a light on subjects most other dealers / collectors would rather just pretend don't exist, which may be preferable in the short term, but could kill this hobby long term.
