I think the rim damage would "details" grade this regardless by any grading service worth a rat's behind (hope this doesn't get me moderator censored). It's so hard to get a good idea of the coin. When seen in person the patina looks more pronounced.

    I voted:
This coin is fairly circulated but I can't tell for sure if it has or has not not been cleaned.

The last picture of the obverse looks like it may have some hairlines but the others I did not notice them. Might just be the angle.

More angles of this coin for your perspective. I'm focusing on the areas potentially suspicious. DSC00099.JPG DSC00110.JPG DSC00107.JPG DSC00096.JPG DSC00095.JPG DSC00094.JPG .

I can't decide about the cleaning. I voted, circulated, but can't decide on the cleaning. There appears to be a light scratch on the obverse, but that might by PMD along with the rim damage while circulated.

    OP, What's your opinion?

On some of the angles photos...I'm seeing hair-lining which makes me think it's been improperly cleaned. Not 100% certain without seeing it in hand, but my feeling is it has been harshly cleaned. It does have a pretty heavy hit on the rim so either way...this coin is not gradable IMHO.

Actually, cotton gloves put the coin at more risk. He is holding the coin in the accepted safest manner. Bare handed by the rim.

If one spends some time looking at coins in Details/Genuine slabs on Heritage you will find many, many, coins designated as harshly cleaned, but when you look at them, you can't see any sign of it. So you'll sit there and scratch your head and say - why ?

About the only answer I can give you is that sometimes a harshly cleaned coin just has a certain look to it when viewed in pictures. You often will not see fine hairlines or scratches on the coin, and as a general rule that's what people always look for. So when they don't see them, they naturally don't think the coin has been harshly cleaned.

But there is another look that harshly cleaned coins have too, and this coin exhibits that look. I don't know any other way to describe it other than to say that coin kind of has a, what I think of anyway, rubbed look. And this is not something you will recognize right away, especially not from pictures. In hand it is somewhat easier to see, but even then it requires a certain level of experience.

So I would say that yes, this coin has been harshly cleaned. But other than as a learning experience the point is moot for as others have said the coin is definitely ungradeable because of the rim damage.

 how do cotton gloves put the coin at risk?

Easier to slip and drop the coin. You don't have all of you 'feeling' wearing gloves.

Loss of dexterity which GREATLY increases the risk of dropping a coin.

More often than not, wearing gloves offers nothing more than a false sense of security to those who do not know any better.

I use cotton gloves on occasion. Usually whenever I search rolls. I haven't dropped any coins yet.

Sometimes you just need to listen to the voice of experience and take their word for it ;)

    Good for you Josh.

I wear gloves every day...all day long. I can promise you that whenever you have material between your hand and an object (any object)...you have reduced dexterity. That's all I'm going to say on the matter.

Yeah I get that. I mainly just use them when looking through rolls of coins. (hands get very dirty afterwards 99% of the time)
