Is this a real U.S. Mint bag? How old would you say it is? Someone used it as padding to mail a framed picture to me. Kind of a surprise gift!
Looks legit to me. I have that looks similar except black lettering and a different company instead of "L.I. INC.". Nice surprise gift!
I agree. They do not look like mine, which are 60's and 70's vintage I believe. Great for storing 5000 wheat cents, (obviously), but also nice to stick your piles of world coins into. Between those two uses I have about 8 lying around, (yeah, I know, I have "issues").
Today we have trouble imagining tossing 250 gold coins into a bag! That's, what, about 17.5 lbs (std) of gold? Rob
OMG... 250 1931 Philadelphia double eagles... 20-25k each. That's 5-6.25 million dollars for the bag (with coins). NICE!
I've seen some really cool stuff on this website. That bag is in the top 5. If all 250 of the coins graded 61-63, I averaged 50K a coin. That's $12.5M. Incredible what that bag (may have) once held.
I do own this bag Josh, but that's a rather long line you're standing in. Purchased from the survivor of a Virginia banker, this is one of my neater acquisitions. Because only about 250 pieces of the contained issue are believed to have survived, I speculate that only this bag escaped destruction with those coins. - Mike
Darnit. I am in search for some quality mint bags from the early 1900s or 1800s. It will add to the authentic look of my western display I'm putting together.
Some ' doctors' seek out the older mint bags so their AT textile patterns are closer to the weave of the real bag of the time.
Out of curiosity, what do you suppose that bag or one like it is worth? After seeing your post, I began my search to try and find one for sale. No such luck as of yet.
I have seen a full mint bag of half eagles on the auction block before, but I'm quite certain that was for a common date, or I would have noted it more specifically. That bag of coins sold for a lot more than I expected, likely because of individual high grade pieces, and not because of the bag itself. I have no reliable reference for pricing an important standalone bag such as this, although a Heritage rep who saw my photos years ago suggested consigning, with a start at $300. Personally, I like it way too much to entertain offers in that neighborhood. Furthermore, I already discussed the first right of refusal with a collector a few years back . . . nothing I'm contractually bound to, but I like the guy too much to slight him.
