Hello friends, Once again, I need your expertise please! I can't get any clues from this Roman coin recently acquired for $12 ... As always, any information will be greatly appreciated. Best, Monetarium
I believe its Licinius I struck at Alexandria. Give me a few moments and I'll find the correct attribution.
Licinius I, RIC VII Alexandria 10: IMP C VAL LICIN LICINIVS PF AVG, laureate head right / IOVI CONSER-VATORI AVGG, Jupiter standing left, chlamys across left shoulder, holding Victory on globe and sceptre, eagle with wreath left. Wreath over Epsilon over N in right field. Mintmark ALE
You are quite welcome. I enjoy the identification process. I should warn you, however, I'm not always correct. But I think I have this one ID'ed correctly.
The description sounds pretty good to me! Ancients are fascinating, but sometimes a little tricky when it comes to identification.
http://www.jhecoins.com/obverselegends.htm Your Licinius has legible legends and is a good candidate for using the link above. It requires you not guess but just put in letters of which you are sure but it does allow wildcards: D*VALLI*INIVSNO*C gives Legend Emperor DNVALLICINLICINIVSNOBC Licinius II (Caesar A.D. 317-324)
