I am a total sucker for dramatically toned silver coins. I just won this 1758 sixpence on teh ebay. $52, but I was prepared to bid (a lot) higher. Win! This is a good upgrade from my current washed-out George II sixpence.
I had been seeing this coin for over a year in a case at an antique store I go to, in very poor cardboard and tape holder. I had been wanting it for a while, and finally offered $23and was accepted. The ppictures aren't the best, because my camera isn't the best either.
This one brings me one step closer to completing my Irish collection. This has a low mintage of 64,000 and is quite hard to find. It's not in perfect shape but that means it was more in my price range.
Some coins from Portugal (monarchy): 10 Reis 1892 20 Reis 1891 20 Reis 1892 200 Reis 1891 400 Reis 1835
Been on the prowl for this coin for a couple years. These aren't as easy to find as the mintage would suggest (raw or otherwise). The horizontal striations on the obverse and reverse are die polish lines, as they go "behind" the devices. Johann Gottfried Schadow was the German sculptor of the quite famous quadriga statue atop the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. This coin commemorates the 225th anniversary of his birth on 20 May 1764. It's a very attractive design in my opinion.
A fine coin indeed. I have one too. By the way, while I know that euro collector coins are not exactly popular in this community, this one might be interesting for some, as it honors the same man. The €10 piece was issued in May; attached is an image of the coin (with the "BB" initials of the designer Bodo Broschat). A larger and more detailed image from the design contest is here: http://www.badv.bund.de/SharedDocs/...Muenzwettbewerbe/10Schadow1.jpg?__blob=poster You can not only see the Princesses (mentioned in the Wikipedia article about Schadow) but also parts of the frieze that he made, in 1800, for the Berlin mint. A copy of the frieze can still be seen on the façade of the former mint building in central Berlin. Christian
yep, buying this one has opened the door to me wanting a few more german states 3 mark coins of different types.
Two new purchases today for under $10.00 total. The 2 Dinar I wanted because I have the 1 dinar of the same year. The Hungarian silver commemorative was in a junk coin box, got it for less than a dollar. It is 12 grams .50 fine silver.
This a coin I got after I realized I didn't have any from Afghanistan. I've been doing cultural research on Afghanistan for the last five years and my time is coming to an end in September. So to celebrate my time researching Afghanistan I got this coin. I don't really like Islamic coinage very much so it took a while to find something I like. Anyway just a small token of appreciation to myself before I move on to something else.
Ya that is very true for sure!! Just translating what written on is one thing I find hardest for me.ebay if a raw coin make sure they have a KM# listed.!!
Arrived yesterday. KM 156.2 Chile 10 Centavos 1901 over date 1891. This particular year is rare and I could find no other specimen documented to compare. The coin seems high Au or low MS, but struck with a very worn die (maybe 10 years in use). Still have a nice cartwheel. The blackish tone is not that attractive, but is at least not polished.
