Coin of the year at best.

I like baseball also, but I don't see the coin of the century being themed after baseball. It's also barely a coin. Something about the concave design makes it hard for me to call it a coin. I see it more as a novelty item. The only thing that separates it from other novelty items such as bobbleheads and cards is that it has metal value (in the case of the silver ones).

The coin of the century will most likely be one no one would ever expect.

Well, that and the fact that it is a government issued legal tender coin.

However, I personally believe that this coin will continue to be a popular commemorative but I don't see it being anything "historic" in the long run. It's is a unique piece and it's the first of it's kind...so it will remain popular.

Legal tender or not, the HOF "coin" is a gimmick to increase sales. That's all it is. The mint is becoming a souvenir shop. Just like the souvenir shops near the exits of theme parks. They try to squeeze every last dollar out of patrons. In this case collectors. With that said, it has been popular and still is popular today. I speculate it will lose its popularity. I suspect in the long run it will just be one of those things people reflect back on and say, "remember when those curved coins were popular". Sort of like pet rocks.

Just like any other commemorative coin or coin not intended for circulation. It's no worse.

I have no doubt that the current popularity will decrease substantially. But, I don't see this being a commemorative that sells for melt. I think it will always be on the popular side...when compared to the other modern commemorative coins.

There have been several commemoratives over the years that started off with crazy prices just like this program. Today they are nothing special. I don't see anything that will make this new program any different.

Populariity, yes - it is in the shape of a baseball, pretty cool. But unique? hard to say something of which there are 50,000 or 500,000 of is unique. 50 years from now, surviving Dustin Pedroia Bobbleheads will be more scarce because they're fragile and will be in hands of children. What do we suppose the survival rate of these "coins" might be? 90%? more?

And gold of course. What I meant to say was silver and gold.

but if there is no demand for them, then who cares how many are left.

In a hundred years, I predict these will have the same allure as GSA Morgans.

In 50 years, if you ask most people, even Boston baseball fans, about Pedroia, their response will most likely be "who?".

yep. I remember a handful of Chicago baseball players from the 80's, and none from the 70's. unless a player is a hall of famer, they will most likely be forgotten.

I think the gold will do well AFTER the flip.

Over 1500+ gold coin transactions sold on Ebay and Great Collections in June. Some of those orders were for more than one coin. That's not counting COIN TV and other venues, just Ebay and GC. I'd say when they throw out the first pitch of the 2015 season we ought to know how these are going to do. You have coin collectors and autograph collectors wanting these. No other modern coin has that base.

Now to answer the question about coin of the century. Since we have 85 more years it's hard to say. I think there are a few coins that will give the HoF coin a run for the money.

    2001 Buffalos
    2006 Reverse Proof AGE
    2008 Fractional Buffalos
    2009 UHR

I only have one of the above, the UHR. Since I'll be selling all of the HoF coins I have I guess my pick is the UHR.....so far. I'd put the HoF coins in 3rd behind the UHR and the Fractional Buffalos.
