Ron Henry--"AND a double reverse clad."

I'm new to collecting coins, but how can that happen? You do mean to say no heads but two tails, right? Is that an error coin, or a trick coin that made it into "circulation"?

Rob I don't have a clue if it's an error coin or a trick coin. It looks just like a standard clad that has two "tails" sides. So your guess is as good as mine. Maybe some of the experts on this site can help solve the riddle.

Magician coin. Try putting in the freezer and dropping it on its edge. It should come apart. I found half of one before.

Got a roll of quarters and 5 rolls of nickels the other day. Got 2 hole fillers for my state quarter set and 3 keepers from the nickels. Nothing great but at least I found something!

I find a lot of those 2009 nickels. I don't really like them, but I stick them back because I hear they're somewhat scarce. Most of the ones I find are in less than pristine condition. Maybe the nice ones have all been picked from circulation by collectors?

I just checked the mintage numbers for the 2009s and found that my spiral bound 2014 red book has a misprint for the Denver numbers, they added an extra 0. The numbers aren't that low for the year but I'm going to save them if I find em, and yeah, all the ones I do have so far look beat up. I think I only have one Philly so far.

Not my coins, but I did find a mother lode over the weekend. Was staying with a relative and helping them look for something in the attic. I like to bowl, so I quickly noticed an old bowling bag in the corner and asked if there was a ball inside. I was told no, but was then invited to pick up the bag - turns out it weighed about 50 pounds. So what was inside?

About 20 rolls of all-silver quarters (opened the end of one and saw a 1953 staring at me), and about $200 worth of silver dollars. Said relative was holding on to them for sentimental reasons and knows little about coins, so I stressed to them the importance of not taking them down to the bank or the coinstar machine (sorry, everyone). If I ever get to go through these coins, I'll let you know what was in there.

Anyone else ever find anything like this at a relative's house?

WOW. That's quite amazing. Maybe he'll get tired of them being there and sell them to you at "buddy's price".

My Aunt and Uncle had a big barrel of coins, had to be at least 50 pounds of coins. They said I could have them all. There was a lot of silver and just plain cool coins in there. I don't know if I ever recorded the results.

Funny you should mention this. Last week while visiting extended family I was fortunate enough to look through the coins my late grandmother, grandfather, and uncle collected from circulation. I had been hearing about this collection for many years and was excited to finally have the chance to look through it. My grandmother worked as a teller at a small-town bank in Indiana for 27 years, from 1953 to 1980. She would buy the silver coin as it was deposited at her teller station, just as many tellers do today. Can you imagine how much silver passed through her hands from 1953 to 1980?!?! Unfortunately, they were relatively poor and didn't have much extra money to swap-out for silver. As a result, they didn't save as much silver coin as they could have had they had more disposable income. Anyway, the box of coin weighed about 100 pounds and contained a few Morgan and Peace dollars; walking liberty, franklin, and kennedy halves; a few standing liberty quarters, silver washington quarters; liberty head dimes, and silver roosevelt dimes; a few shield, buffalo, and war nickels; and about 15 pounds of wheat and steel pennies. There were actually almost 400 steel pennies, which was more of those than I had ever seen in any single place.

There were also several old-style Whitman coin folders, too, with walking liberty halves, franklin halves, liberty head dimes, roosevelt dimes, and wheat cents, plus a partial folder with Indian Head cents.

I really appreciated seeing the collection and throughly enjoyed the few hours I was able to spend sorting it. Seeing this collection humbled me and made me realize there truly is very little silver remaining in circulation today. Oh well, I still enjoy searching coin rolls for silver and collectables from time to time despite the fact my hobby does not and will not pay for itself.

Cheers to all, and happy hunting :)
