did i mention that the seller only agreed to issue a refund after a case was filed with ebay? and that the seller indicated that they would keep the money and the coin if they could get away with that. yeah, they are really honest. come on, you know better than that. they knew very well what they were doing. do you really think that those almost 16,000 listings (from the link that i posted) with the word (rare) in the title are either legit or those sellers (don't know what they are doing?) that is just silly.
When did the seller indicate that they would keep the money and the coin if they could get away with it?
the jist of it is: the seller told me that if they received the coin without a tracking number (but still received the coin anyway) they would not admit to receiving it, and would not issue a refund.
Maybe I missed that part. IDK. To me, though, you were both wrong, (but you were not really misled since the seller posted clear pictures), you sent it back and got a refund. Carrying out a personal crusade will not help your blood pressure. Chalk it up to inexperience and move on sir. If you wish to get into error coins I recommend reading lots of posts in the error section of Cointalk, get a good book on error coins and how coins are produced, generally get yourself up to speed on the subject. If this is the worst thing that happens to you in coin collecting consider yourself extremely lucky. I was just saying move on really. You should have known better. You made an error, and at least got your money back. I cannot stop you from doing whatever you like, just giving you my opinion garnered from quite a few decades in this hobby sir. What the seller did was not the worst thing BY FAR I have ever seen, heard, or had done to me. Maybe he was doing it intentionally, maybe he is as ignorant of error coins as you are. Take your refund and buy a decent book on error coins instead. You will be money ahead in the long run. Btw, just in case you are wondering, no I do not know the seller, I am not a seller, so there is no reason I would be defending him/her needlessly. I am a collector/hoarder, and I do not sell. When I buy a coin its a lifetime commitment.
Is calling this one rare "silly"? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1860-C-5-Go...57?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item4ac6eda3e1 With an estimated total surviving pop of 150-200 in all grades/conditions, I do not believe the term "rare" to be at all misleading even though there certainly are much rarer coins out there (this was quickly and simply pulled out as an example). While I wholeheartedly agree that the word/term is over and questionably used, such a blanket statement is unfair, plus it is just simple marketing. After all, Wal-Mart does not advertise "cheap junk" even though they certainly some things that can rightfully be described as such, so can you really expect a seller to do just that when everyone else is calling their coins "rare", regardless of if they are junk or not? This is just one of those words that, while it should have a greater meaning, no longer does and has been cheapened. "Hero" is another one that comes to mind.
I agree. There is no reason to leave negative feedback. You received the coin you had purchased, you decided (after doing research after the fact) that you didn't want it...so you returned it and got your $8 back. Sure, the seller may not have been the easiest to deal with...but clear photos were posted and it was over $8. I can understand why the seller might have been annoyed. But, in the end...the seller agreed to the return. IMHO, you have to right to leave negative feedback.
And the fact that you (coins776) refused to cooperate with the Seller's return policy (include tracking number for return) and the seller eventually agreed to accept it without tracking.
I'm not defending any of them. If all they are doing is using the word "rare" in listings, I don't care. Just not important to me.
do you really think that sellers can't make a lot of money from selling $8.00 coins? they sure can. think about it. some ebay sellers are allowed to list 1,000 or even 10,000 listings per month, that is $8,000 to $80,000 per month. not a small amount of money. if you and some of the others don't care about a few dollars and would just toss it to the wind, then why not everybody just give me a few dollars each, then i would be rich. i am joking about the part about giving me money of course, just to make a point.
just because the seller was forced by ebay to give a refund, then all of a sudden that makes them a great seller? get your head out of the clouds. where do you come up with such nonsense? please, open a book once in a while, AND READ IT!
by the way, whenever so many diagree with me on any given subject, then i figure that i am even more right about that subject than i had thought. translation: the most popular opinions are often times the most false.
Well that's a really backwards way to think of things. Usually when opinions become popular, it is because people realize the truth to them and there is a general consensus that they are correct. Of course this isn't 100% true in every case, but more often than not it is pretty logical. To plug your ears and assume you are right because everyone else disagrees with you just doesn't make any sense. Not only does it not follow much logic, it shows stubbornness and an unwillingness to listen to others who have a different opinion than you do.
If you're looking for an echo chamber for your ideas, comments, and disregard for other opinions, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
i have had far worse problems from coins and sellers than with this seller, way too many to mention. i have (just for starters) been ripped off more times than i could mention. there was even a seller who never sent a coin and took a one year vacation from their selling account, right after they ripped me off. the thing is, does anyone need to be an expert on any given item to purchase said item? would a person purchasing clothing need to be a tailor? would a person buying a dvd movie need to be an actor? would a person buying music need to be a musician? would a person buying a book need to be a writer?
No but in the world of coin collecting, the responsibility falls on both parties to research what they see before buying. You may not need to be a tailor to buy clothing, but you still need to make sure that it is the right size and brand that you want.
"echo chamber" just look at your comments and then compare them to most of the others on here. not just on this thread, but on any of the threads posted by anyone. you have just described exactly what you and most of the others do on here most of the time. i.e. you all agree with each other about most everything. nobody seems to know how to think for themselves. they act like parrots.
There are plenty of disagreements on this site, but we are not the ones saying "I'm right because everyone else disagrees with me". Either way, sorry you had a bad experience from the seller. Just take it as an example to research a little bit more before purchasing items.
I understand your point, but the coin could have been sent with tracking for less than $5.05. May I ask how the coin was sent to you? Did it come with tracking? You can say this all you want, Coins, but had the seller not been honest, there would have been no way for you to prove that the coin was indeed returned. With all due respect, had the coin been lost, I fully believe you would be accusing the seller of lying even though it was your choice not to follow ebay's recommendations that were put in place to protect both parties. What way and what mail fraud? What did you tell them about the seller; that they requested you return the coin in the manner ebay suggests? That a coin was listed as an "error" but clearly was not? I am sorry, but I just don't see the big deal here. When one chooses to buy (or sell) on ebay, they must take the good with the bad, and while there is certainly a lot of bad (much worse than this), it's all part of the game and since you know this, it should be easy for you to avoid it. Again, none of this is meant as an insult, but we all must choose our battles wisely. In the end you got your refund even after gambling with the return method. Both sides here bear some level of responsibility, so just let bygones be bygones.
