GORGEOUS coin. I think, under graded by at least one, and possibly two grades. Definite yes to a beanie.
Is a tough call to reholder me I love the old slabs so I'm inclined to leave it alone I can't wait to see it in hand!!
They make a product just for that , but most people I know use one for polishing headlights for your car .
I use Carnuba car wax on the slabs that have hairline scratches. That works. I WOULD NEVER reslab an OGH, as everybody knows the grades were conservative--I'd polish the slab.
While I agree with the sentiment...this "fact" is somewhat obsolete. It is true, back in the days of the OGH they were more conservative when it comes to grading. However, like today...each grade contained a range of quality. The vast majority of the OGH coins that would upgrade by today's standards have been picked through and have been upgraded. What remains (for the most part), are the lower end coins from the OGH era that are "good for the grade" today and not worthy of an upgrade. The days of when an OGH could be "assumed" to be undergraded have long passed. That said, people still pay a premium for them because many don't understand what I have just stated. Personally, I like the OGH slabs because I think it is cool to see the older tag in the slab...but like I said, you can't assume they are undergraded.
I think I like OGH coins because they are cool. I would say it is 50/50 on an upgrade for some of the coins in OGHs. Doesn't matter, as I think they are an important part of collecting in and of themselves.
I agree...I think they are cool and an interesting part of our hobby's history. I don't have the data to back it up...but I would imagine that today 50/50 might be a high since so many have already been upgraded. But, they are still a cool part of the history.
I think their cool too as to upgrades some would some won't I think this one would have a decent shot at it many ogh coins have been put away in collections for the last 15-20 years and are just now appearing on the market and as many collectors like the old holders their leaving them as is with perhaps a trip to cac for a bean
My SWAG based on the pics is that it will get a greenie since it appears properly graded and is a nice coin for the grade.
Is the coin as a PR62 an ugly coin? I'm looking at a Seated Proof graded as a 62, the pictures make it look nice but in hand does it look bad?
No nearly all the early proofs are attractive in my opinion. The grades base on marks in the fields as do ms grades and also the amount of die polish hairlining the more the lower the grade. I have a pr 61 1882 trade with significant hairlining in the fields but it's still a stunning coin as is this one they'll look good together
I'm gonna point out a small thing people tend to overlook. What makes people think that people trade coins so frequently that all of the 'older holders' have come out of hiding? There are still raw coins that come to light everyday due to hoards, long time collectors, and other such factors. Only dealers and active traders are interested in upgrading the plastic for a better grade. Most collectors that I have seen just put the coins up and hold onto them for awhile. They don't reevaluate them every 2-3 years to see if they are going to upgrade when they don't necessarily plan on selling them any time soon and waste money for a new grading fee on something they already enjoy. It's the same idea behind the old ANACS holders. There are still plenty that sit in peoples collections and plenty that even dealers don't care to waste money on a risk if upgrading. Sure there are many savvy dealers and traders but they can't catch it all. We sometimes take that for granted because we choose to immerse ourselves in sites like this one, but I am certain we are a minority. Just remember there are plenty of hoarders, probably as many as collectors that aren't interested in the value of their collection, just the fact that they have it in there, know what it is, and enjoy it. It would behoove you to check those slabs EVERYTIME to evaluate the coin, that's the only way you will ever truly know. New material comes to light everyday, so don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Another observation I have made note of is how many collectors in my local club actively check online for material. Most of them don't, maybe at best 25% of us utilize various aspects of the web, and only 2-3 of us are pretty heavily immersed. My point is, there are still untold numbers of these old slabs that are out there, keeping checking them out.
There is some truth to what you are saying...however A LOT of OGH coins have been cracked out. People who made a lot of money getting those coins upgraded...have cherry picked a lot of the good coins already. My point is, the ratio of upgradable coins has drastically shifted. As a result, it's not nearly as safe of a bet to assume an OGH coin will upgrade. My advice is just a word of caution to closely examine the coin...because they won't "all" upgrade. Sure, some coins have been hidden away for a long time...and those won't fall into this. But, a very large number of OGH coins have been picked through.
Regardless this is a very sweet coin in hand and I think it is very solid for the grade what's interesting out of the coins I sent to cac many of the ones that's stickered were the ones I bought raw out of estate sales auctions etc and had slabbed in the last year or so
