Hello I'm in the market for an Athenian tetradrachm. Does anyone know any good online stores? I already know vcoins and ebay(ebay kinda scares me because of the fakes) but am trying to find more. I'm mainly looking for Transitional style ones but any would be fine. Thanks!

I usually look on vcoins ... but lately I've been trying the many different auction sites (but often you'll have to wait a couple/few weeks until the auction date rolls around)

You say you know VCoins which currently has about 175 of them for sale so the questions comes down to what is wrong with each of them. The second one in the above list is really exceptional due to the full crest on the helmet and is probably worth their $5k asking price. There are a couple others I'd call reasonably reasonable (and some owned by dreamers). Oddly, two of them once belonged to me but I traded them to a guy who now has consigned them to a dealer. Trust me, you don't want them.

Tomorrow and Saturday is the Baltimore coin show at the Convention Center. If you are within a few hundred miles, I suggest a road trip. I suspect you would see a hundred of these. They are not rare and dealers like to have one to sell.

Another resource would be electronic auctions like CNG, vauctions, agora, roma, etc. I just by accident happen to know CNG has a nice run of Athenian tets in their latest auction.

The vcoins ones are good but a lot of them do cost a lot. Im looking more between $300-$500 RANGE.

That price range nowadays will most likely get you a F or one with a modest bankers test cut. Nice VF Tets are higher than that now.

I gave you a list by PM on June 17th.

Be patient & pick a nice one for your collection. The coins have been around for 2,400 years so waiting a while longer should be OK. :D I know that is easier said than done.

It would be great if you could post your selection here at CT prior to actually pulling the trigger.

Well, you can sometimes score a pretty sweet deal on ebay, but unfortunately, the "feel good factor" is not quite as high as it would be buying from a seller with a great return policy and/or a lifetime authenticity guarantee .... if you can find an ebay dealer that offers a guarantee, then it may be worth the gamble (hopefully you know enough to avoid bidding on fakes)

I know you did and those have been helpful but I want to see if there was any more. you told me to look for some "dealer list" but i cant find that.

This list is expensive. Researching this thread made me see one of the owls on that list that will be flying home to me soon. I never would have searched to see what tets were on VCoins had it not been for this thread so I would be richer had I mowed the lawn instead of reading it.

Please post your target coin before you buy. You'll get lots of good advice here.

Also post the coin you eventually buy. I'm in the market for an Alexander Tet in roughly the same price range.

Although I've noticed the nicer ones(at least within my budget) tend to be in the $6-900 price range. I'd really be interested in seeing what you buy.

    Good Luck!

I'm afraid that if I post the link in here before I buy it and the deal is good someone will snatch it up from here. There is one that I might pull the trigger on but I don't know for sure yet.

That's too bad ... I admit there is a minute chance that one of us will snatch it up, but man, we'll sure catch abuse when we try to post it, eh?

I like to have enough confidence that there are enough of those sweet Attic Owl examples on this planet to prevent one of us from turning on you and breaking the "unwritten ancient coin law"
