There is an application called CoinSnap that when it is installed onto your computer is supposed to identify the coin and tell you how valuable it is when you take a picture of it. Does anyone know if this works?

I downloaded it to see what it is. It required you to sign up for a 7 day free trial and then start charging thru your phone bill. Not in this lifetime!!!!!

From one of the reviews, it... doesn't understand mint marks?

That's going to put a pretty firm limit on its utility.

I've got the free Coinoscope app downloaded on my phone, though I haven't tested it yet. I don't think it shows value, I got it mostly for foreign coins in Arabic / Asian text. Here's the description from Google: Coinoscope is a visual search engine for coins. Coinoscope makes coin recognition easy - just snap a picture of a coin with your phone camera and the app will show you a list of similar coins. Click on the coin to see additional information in the web browser of your phone.

Coiniscope works great, and it's free. Helps me big time when I took the plunge into world coins

Thanks for the timely tip. i came across an odd coin in my wife's possession and remembered this post. Coinoscope found it on Numista right away. It's from Egypt; my wife's former in-laws traveled the world and brought back change from many places.
