As has been previously noted I seem to have an irrational liking for coins from Lugdunum. Perhaps this coin goes some way to explaining things to some extent. The fact that there is a decent supply of fully silvered coins in high grade in decent style means that I go back to these coins again and again. Maximianus Herculius Antoninianus Obv:– IMP C VAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– IOVI CONSERVATORI, Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt in right hand and scepter in left hand. Minted in Lugdunum (C|_). Emission 2. Officina 3. Spring to Summer A.D. 286 Reference:– Cohen 362. Bastien 60 (9 examples cited). RIC V Pt. 2 Lugdunum 388 Bust Type C var (C) (Not listed with C in left field in RIC) Fully silvered with some areas of silvering stained red. Very little if any wear visible. A scarcer variety with the added interest of a Jupiter type minted for Max. Herc. rather than Diocletian. Martin
