I bought the following coin on a bit of a whim. I have had examples of this fairly common type before but this one appealed to me and I bought it.

    Septimius Severus denarius
Obv:– L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIIII, Laureate head right
Rev:– PROFECTIO AVG, Septimius Severus in military dress on horseback right, holding spear
    Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare, A.D. 197
References:– RIC 494 (Scarce), RSC 580

The engraver was skilled enough to make the portrait of the rider recognisable as the emperor but seems to have had some problems in remembering how the foreleg of the horse should look. It would appear that this horse has too many joints to make for a comfortable ride.

Wonderful addition. I like the reverse especially, of course due to the beard. Dont see that often with reverse figures that are suppose to be the emperor.

Another SS? You got to be kidding me!! :p

Very nice all joking aside, regardless of the horses legs (especially the foreleg that is straight as a board).

He looks pretty happy on the horse. Great addition!

Bing I only post a very small number of the SS that I obtain. I don't want to drive you guys nuts with a swamp of them. I try to be as selective as I can.

I hope you know I was only kidding. I know it's your collection passion.

I only have two. One is reasonably nice while the other is green AE. rs3110bb1060.jpg rs3120bb1336.jpg

Septimius had several horse types. I don't have the Rome mint Profectio which shows a rearing horse. There are some Advent types also from Rome and, my favorite, the Emesa SPQR type (which comes in a few minor variations you do not want to see, I'm sure).

I rarely buy SS anymore probably because Martin would outbid me for what I might want and partly because I would find it very, very hard not to show them all to you. Be glad that Martin is a gentleman of great restraint. :angelic:

Perhaps I speak only for myself, but I would love to see them all no matter how many that might end up being.
