In hopes of getting it re-graded? Would anyone dare crack open a MS-70 coin for any reason? Thank you.

Some people buy Slabbed coins from NGC & PCGS online, and then crack them out to keep raw in an Album or in some other storage. The reason they buy TPG coins is that it gives them a feeling of security while buying online without being able to inspect the coin in hand. (A lot of raw coins on ebay have been messed with.)

Some others play the crack-out game like you mentioned (hoping for a higher grade), but this is not possible on a MS70 / PF70.

Some people crack them out becuase they want an NGC to be slabbed by PCGS, or vice-versa.

I am sure there are other reasons too...

If you crack open a MS70 for re-grade chances are it won't come back as a MS70.
That being said I see no point in cracking it out

There's a member on here who has a nearly complete set of Morgan dollars; nearly all of which he cracked out of PCGS holders so he could keep them in his Dansco album. I believe he's done the same with a Walking Liberty Half Dollar set as well.

    Whatever floats your boat!

    For any reason? Sure.
If the coin has developed ugly spots.
If you need some change for the laundry.
    If the slab is damaged.

Why would somebody buy a NGC or PCGS graded coin to put in an album anyway. It wouldn't offer me anymore security than me buying a coin raw from a trusted source.

They would if they liked the slabbed coin (or its price) better than the available raw coins.

I needed a $2.5 gold for my 7070, and couldn't find a raw example I liked locally. I founds a nice AU example online, so I bought it and broke it out for my album. No regrets.

Most of us ancient collectors do it cause we find it a crime to put them in plastic tombs. We tend to like the hold our coins and imagine the history.

They were buried for thousands of years, all have been cleaned and nearly all have some flaw since they were all struck by hand.

I always crack mine out if its bought in a slab.

If say a dealer/collector sends a coin to either PCGS or NGC and it's graded AU, they may crack it out and send it back in hoping for MS. Depending on the coin, that's big money from AU to MS.

    It all depends.

Some people generally despise graded coins. If they find a coin they want but it's in a slab...they will buy it and "free" the coin. Then, they will store it to their liking.

I would never crack one out as I would never buy a slabbed coin.
This slabbing thing has become is quite a con game.
It was designed to be a con game many years ago.

I would buy the slab coin and keep it in the slab as a guarantee of the grade and authenticity of the coin. When it is time to sell, there's no arguing with the grade on an NGC or a PCGS holder as there is when raw coins are being sold.

I completely agree with you...I keep my slabbed coins as they are too. But, some people really despise slabbed coins. They consider them coins in a "tomb."

    Yes . . . because they're too common . . . the raw coins are more scarce! :D . . . crickets . . .

Because they are not happy with the grade their coins have just received, and sometimes it's easier to find a buyer for a raw coin than a details graded one. Potential buyers may think they can get a great deal if they submit the coin for grading and get a clean grade - which of course most times is not going to happen.

If I was buying the slabbed coin I would offer a price based on what I think the coin grades. What PCGS or NGC calls it is immaterial.

I only own 1 slabbed coin (trade dollar) and am thinking about buying a Saint Gaudens $20. I would lean towards slabbed 'cause it's a lot of money, but I'm going to buy from a reputable seller anyway. I think it'd be awesome to be able to feel the raw coin in my hand. Many people think I'm being silly. They're probably right.
