By now you've noticed it, kind of hard to miss. It's fairly self-explanatory, I want to put together a resource that will help all of us to locate the best threads here at CoinTalk. We're nearing two million posts now, and we have thousands of really great threads but sometimes the best content isn't easy to find. I invite everyone to tell me (or any of the other moderators) which threads you think should be included. No way I'll ever find them all on my own. Post them here. Email them to me. Private message. Use the report button even (just be sure to say you're recommending a featured thread, not reporting spam, lol). This is just a foundation now, of what I hope will be a very useful resource for us all.

I feel like the big megathreads such as "newest acquisitions" shouldn't be elevated to featured thread status very often as they always have strong traffic. I think this new feature would be more useful for promoting high-quality smaller threads that might otherwise go unnoticed and drop to the second page.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. The newest acquisitions threads are a lot of fun, but what I have in mind for the featured thread resource is if you're researching a specific coin or type or some numismatic topic, these would be the type of articles you would want to find when you're searching for information. A newest acquisition thread isn't necessarily going to help when you're doing that.

I got your email and think it would be good if you just put a button in the forum ( like report ) that shows in every post in every topic or just like

Post Reply - Upload a File - More Options

show when typing a post. It could say BEST or FAVORITE TOPIC and it would get a click count or link to the moderators. Another way to tell if it is a good topic is to have a counter for when it is read. It would be easier if you had a count of something rather than reading or sorting through everyone's messages or suggestions. Let the forum do the work.

I actually suggested pretty much the same thing as that to the coder and he didn't seem to be interested in adding that. One thing I do want to do is rebuild the old "Thread of the Week" contest because that was a great way of having everyone participate in identifying the best content. Only problem there is that I'm going to have to hire a coder to custom write it for me and that will be quite an expense.

I think it's already turning into another topic hoarding section with multiple pages. Wouldn't it be best to just have the three or five threads, that are currently seeing the most activity in the form of responses. February and March, that's 3 to 4 months ago.

OK, so what ? The idea is to identify and feature threads with the best content in them, regardless of when they were posted.

For example, this thread - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/luster-a-guide-for-beginners.58435/

That thread is one of the top 5 threads of all time that have been posted on CT, my opinion and that of many others as well. But it was started 5 years ago.

That's what Peter is asking members to do, to go and look and find the best threads. It doesn't matter if they were posted yesterday or 10 years ago. The important part is the information that is contained in the thread and what that information can teach you about this hobby.

Activity is meaningless if there is nothing to be learned.

We should see if he could update those images, I guess they were posted on a different site but not there anymore. Haven't seen him on CoinTalk for a while though.

He did update the pics, look at the end of thread.

As for why you haven't seen him, he left when Paul was given a vacation for a week. Hasn't been back since.

Perhaps some of my lesson threads from a few months back could be useful.

So, what's the purpose of this dormant category?

    https://www.cointalk.com/forums/numismatic-resources.33/

For me, and many others, featured usually has a specific meaning on forums. I don't think it's meant to be another phone book worth of topics to scroll through.

And featured does have a specific meaning in this forum, what Peter and I both said - the best threads found here on CT.

... meanwhile, it's easier to search out CT content directly through Google, than through CT's search option. I have no need to scroll through, as Peter and you define the future of Featured Threads, "thousands of really great threads"...

So, sounds like the Featured Threads will contain thousands of GIANT featured topics, with GIANT pictures, for people to scroll through. I'll stick to my Google searches for CT content.

It's hard to beat Google, and I have no problem with anyone using it to search CoinTalk like that. I do it myself sometimes too.

The quote, Activity is meaningless if there is nothing to be learned, is superb.
The sole reason I joined this site Was 'to learn'--heck after watching all the threads and reading and learning and searching- I have learned mega tons of info--
I work a full time job and enjoy this hobby when I can---as well as many others-

the best threads-info-click on a button easy to find -heck yeah--
'I come here searching knowledge'' I think that's a quote some where also,
    Need big pictures, arrows-examples---
