Yeah...crazy huh? Last night I watched a series of old documentaries on Rhodesia/Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Man...what a mess! Notice the AK-47 on the coat of arms of Mozambique. I believe Angola also has an AK-47 on their flag. I also saw a doc on the Congo which was another disaster for the people of Africa. All these rebels seem to have taken a Stalinist/Maoist view of government which had already been proven to be a disaster for the people of the Soviet Union and China. What were these guys [rebels] thinking?

Well, in the Cold War period the "Third World" was the site of proxy battles between the U.S. and USSR. Each side would give aid and arms to either the government or rebels, and the other side tended to back the other. It certainly didn't help the situation any.
