a) What are your thoughts on this coin? b) What would you grade it? I found a raw 1927 Saint yesterday and am not sure what to do. It comes from a trusted seller (Harlan Berks) who gave it a particular (internal) grade. I do not want to affect your opinions, so I will post it later in the thread. Being a newbie, I have asked for advice from a few members here. Everyone has different opinions, and I realize two things: 1) seeing it "in hand" is a lot better than any pictures, and 2) ultimately, I have to make the decision myself. Granted, I think that the pictures pretty much suck (the guy I spoke with said they weren't taken by the regular/best photographer; I am trying to get better pictures). I'm just trying to get as much feedback before I need to make my decision. (Those whom I have asked for advice, please don't be offended. Hopefully "more is better" in this case.) Thanks. P.S. They have several more "raw" coins in their inventory if anyone else is interested. This particular one is not on the website anymore.
Nice color, good strike, eye appeal better than average, small bagmarks.... Maybe 64plus ......just around 1550 dollars..perfect as a piece for a gold set. I can see no big problems.
I would say it is a nice looking coin. I would say MS 63-64 seems reasonable, with it trending towards the high end of that range and scale. That is a respectable dealership, so no issues with purchasing there.
The first thing I would do if I were to buy that coin is to send it to NGC or PCGS. If the price that this dealer is asking for is low enough, perhaps you could even raise the value of the coin this way.
From the photos, I think the coin is distinctly better than MS63. A lock 64, shot 65. As for Doug's comment, I haven't yet figured out how to not raise the cost of a coin I got graded.
I'm not going to buy it. Asking price is $1,550 (with credit card) and maybe shipping. If anyone else is interested, contact me and I'll put you in touch with the right people. Or you could just search their website for it I guess. More pics:
