Why condemn the Chinese if you're going to stick up for DCs 1964 Dollars , to me they'll cause nothing but problems down the road and are nothing more than counterfeits themselves . His fantasy , real pieces that he designs are a whole different thing and are fine if you like them .
DC is not a counterfeiter. He does not duplicate US Mint issued product. He has the blessing of the mint.
Rick , maybe counterfeiting is the wrong word . But coppying US issues to me isn't helping our hobby and it's pretty darn close to what the Chinese do , who happen to see nothing wrong in faking our pieces . He has the talent to make unique pieces but he makes copies that will fool unknowing people down the road .But I'm really against his using Bust halves as his host coins for his so called Bust half fantasy piece and other similar US pieces.
DC has never made a coin that was issued by the US. The US never issued the '64 Peace Dollar. The US never issued a '63 Kennedy Half. He makes FANTASY coins. The Chinese copy coins issued by the US. Huge difference.
Rick the fact that the US mint made these pieces is enough for me , we all know about the mints past with supposedly destroyed or never made pieces showing up in some millionaires collection . I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree as I always respected you and your posts . One question though , when and who in the US mint gave him their blessing , or was it for pieces that were never made . That's the clincher to me if they were made by the mint at any time , even if all were supposedly destroyed .
So the "1903-CC Morgans" floating around a few years ago weren't really counterfeits but "fantasy" pieces?
Technically the US did issue 1964 Peace Dollars, but they were supposedly never released. Although I am not against true fantasy pieces, I can see where rzage is going with this. His work can be used to fool uninformed collectors - most of which are beginners in coin collecting. A con artist can present the coin as one of the rare few that escaped the mint. History has shown this is possible.
Where to draw the line on fantasy coins is an interesting topic, in my opinion. At what point does novelty turn into unethical? If you polled 10,000 collectors, I imagine you would get many different answers. In my mind, anything that doesn't stand out as novelty/fantasy is crossing the line. By stand out I mean apparent.
They were minted, but not issued. Issued implies they were dispersed for circulation, which is exactly the opposite of what happened to them.......all were melted.
I don't think you remember correctly. He has however submitted designs for coins to the mint, none were ever chosen.
I'm in agreement with you Rick. None of DC's coins are copies of issued US coinage and therefore they are acceptable IMHO. Just because some people out there fail to do ANY research prior to buying a piece and therefore might make a mistake does not justify banning artwork. There is no way to prevent those who fail to do research from being taken advantage of in some way. Note: I applaud the OP for doing research on this piece before buying.
