I received my MS large cent today, graded MS-62 by NGC. I really really like this coin. It was pretty much just what I was looking for...a mint state coronet large cent. I managed to get it on ebay for $100 under NGC price guide. I imagine this one came from the Randall horde. Variety looks like N-13. Very pleased with the purchase.
That's a nice looking coin. I don't collect these, but I'm a bit surprised by the grade. It looks a bit better than MS62. Is it possible that the spots of discoloration held it back? Would professional conservation improve the grade? Chris
From what I have heard, these spots were pretty common on the hoarded large cents. Whether they held it back or not, possibly, but I am not sure. I think it gives this one a little character.
I guess when you can afford the details, you get to see that Liberty has a double chin. I've never really looked up-close at an MS specimen. That is a double chin, isn't it? Nice coin.
Beautiful coin , I don't think the spots hurt it's looks at all . I am glad I reread your post , as I 1st thought you bought it for $100 . Too bad we can't buy MS 1920 LCs for that cheap . Nice pick up .
I wish, but still getting it at $450 was pretty good. Looks like they are selling for much higher in the same grade.
The only thing I see that could keep it down to a 62 was some slight hairlines and a couple tiny dings . The spots shouldn't matter till gem grades . It's well struck and I want it . lol
Yeah, I spied that die crack on some large cents months ago and once I saw an affordable one with it that I liked, I just had to have it...
Some of the hairlines seen around the face in the first image appear to be on the slab and not the coin itself to my eyes. I don't see the, in the newer pics, different angled shot through the slab.
I'm glad , because I only see them in the 1st pic . You did good then , wish I'd see one near as nice for $450 . A Matron head LC in that condition for that price is a great buy .
Like I said, I don't collect this series, so I can't say how hard they might be on grading. Let's put it this way. If you saw a 1980 Lincoln that looked like this, do you think it would only grade MS62? Chris
I think it would be tough to grade it by comparing it to a graded Lincoln Cent of the same grade. They are drastically different in terms of size and design.
I missed this one completely. Congratulations on an absolutely stunning addition, it would be a pleasure to own one that nice!
