Is there anyone went to the ANA World's Fair OF Money show before? Can I buy the admission ticket online in advance? or I have to purchase it on site? Can you use their WiFi in the ANA convention center during the show? Where to buy Early bird badge ticket? I know this privilege only for ANA merber. Thanks
I have been to many ANA shows and will be going to the August ANA in Chicago (Rosemont), too. Admission is typically paid for at booths that are set up at the entrance to the show and I do not know if the ANA allows general admission payments via the internet. Sometimes the WiFi is password protected and available on a purchase basis while other times it is free. I do not know the case for this show as I always use my own data plan. In general, you can buy Early Bird badges online prior to the show, but it looks like the terrible ANA site is not responding well at the moment.
I've been to two -- long ago. I don't recall paying to get in but that could just be lost in the fog of time. (That's the best I can do to address your question.) But some thoughts about an ANA World's Fair Of Money. -- Go once, just for the experience. -- Why am I paying money to spend my money? -- Coin prices are higher than expected most likely because tables cost the dealers more than other shows. -- Don't expect any low end coins and even mid-catalog value coins will be scarce, again most likely because tables cost the dealers more than other shows.
"Coin prices are higher than expected most likely because tables cost the dealers more than other shows." I've read this theory or thought process many times in the past, but have never actually witnessed it happen at a show. Perhaps it is because of the material I look at, but just perhaps it is because the practice is not nearly as common as many suggest. Truly, I do not know of any dealers who raise prices at a show like the ANA. The cost of the table and attending the show is simply absorbed into the regular accounting of any dealer and it all comes out in the wash. On the other hand, I price my coins lower at a show like the ANA because I not only do not have to pay postage to mail the coin off to a potential buyer, but I will also know right away if the coin is sold or not. I know of many dealers who follow this line of business.
ANA members are free. I went last year for the first time. Admission if $6 for non-ANA members. If you are not an ANA member you can download a $2 off coupon from the website and print it to take with you. If you plan on attending more than one day, download and print it multiple times for the days you plan to attend. Last year at one point they handed out $2 coupons in the line until they ran out for that day but I wouldn't take the chance. Tom B, if you sell at the show, since I don't know you, how would anyone find your table to check it out? And it would be cool if other members of this site posted their company names, selling names, whatever, so other members who are not that familiar with you could find you at the shows and check out your stuff. And in my opinion, I thought prices were high at the show compared to what I could buy on eBay or at other auctions I attend. And there is a LOT of high end stuff at the show. Then again, I can't walk into the show with $20k in my pocket to buy coins and I'll save my credit card for the Kennedys the mint sells at the show.
Prices are always high if not close to or over full retail/price guide at coin shows so be prepared. You have to do some shopping and really know your stuff or else you'll get "picked". I had one dealer at a coin show that "insisted", despite evidence to the contrary, that his 1970 proof set was a small date. Several dealers that I know confirmed the fact that it was in fact a Small Date proof set. I believe that the dealer was simply waiting for the right sucker to swim by. Know your stuff before you buy.
Do ANA members get in early and get to buy the kennedy coins early? Which membership level do you need to be to get in early?
As for the show itself, there will be a LOT of different dealers with a LOT of different coins. Big Dealers, small dealers, and vest pocket dealers. My best advice is to not buy the first thing that catches your eye since two tables up the aisle you might find the exact same thing at a lower cots or even something better. Be frugal.......
I have no idea, but I did talk with ANA and the show is open to members on Tuesday where the Mint will have a booth. Since they will NOT be offering the 50th Anniversary Set but only the 2 Coin Uncirculated Set and the Gold Coin, I have scrapped my plans to go since it just will not be profitable. If the Mint changes their offerings, I'll change my plans.
There is no membership level. You pay $100 for early bird on top of your membership. So if you are dead set at getting in an hour or so earlier than other people, pay the bucks. Otherwise, with ANA membership only you get in a half hour earlier than the rest of the general public.
There actually are different levels of ANA membership... Do you have to be a certain level to get in early? And is the $100 early bird something different? http://www.money.org/membership/join-the-ana/membership-rates.aspx
If you are a member of ANA you get in free. Early bird is totally separate from being a member. You pay the $100 just to get in at 8am instead of 9:30am. That's the only difference. Early bird is NOT a part of ANA membership and in my opinion should be discontinued to make everything fair to everyone.
Please click the link I just posted above your comment... there are different levels of membership. Can any members get in at 9:30 (early), or do you have to be a certain membership level? For example, bronze level gets an e-subscription of the magazine for $3 a month. Can you get in free with this, or do you need to be gold level?
The only difference in Levels is whether or not you want to receive the printed version of the Numismatist OR are the spouse of a current Gold or Platinum member OR are a youth numismatist. ANA Membership fee's do NOT cover Early Bird access to ANA Coin Shows.
Do you not get in 30 minutes early with ANA membership? I thought someone said you did. So how do these things work.. I'm seriously considering going. Do you show up hours early to stand in line? Do they let people in early to buy, or does everyone get in at 10?
Hi, To answer a few of your questions: The World's Fair of Money is free for all ANA members. ANA members also get to enter the bourse at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday-Saturday. The Bronze package, i.e. the subscription-only package, just covers a digital subscription to The Numismatist and doesn't get you into the show. Saturday is free for everyone, and we'll be holding a Free Appraisals area for up to three numismatic items. The daily admission is $6. You can also download a $2 off coupon at WorldsFairofMoney.com. An early-bird pass is $150 and puts you on the floor at 8 a.m., two hours before the public. Membership is required. You can sign up for both at Secure.Money.Org. We will have free WiFi at the show again this year. -- Jake Sherlock, ANA Marketing Director.
