Went to my small LCS and he showed me a box of 16 proof Morgan's that had walked through the door last week. Two were PR66CAM, but this one is the one in the whole batch that caught my eye. Cell phone pics... sorry bout that. Has light yellows, greens, and purples throughout. I figured at $1250 under PCGS price guide, & the fact that I think it's undergraded, it was a no-brainer.

The last one sold in March for $4113 on StACKS. PCGS price guide may be a little off.

Only 972 Proof Morgans minted that year. Wonder how many are even still around?

It's possible one this nice and under-graded only comes to market every once in a while. I think you did well.

You going to try to crack it out and re-slab it to 66?

I'm going to send it in for PCGS reconsideration, then CAC after that. Despite the pics, it looks like a 65 or 66 to me with my 30x loupe. :)

Buy the coin, not the holder, bkozak. ;)

  9. Wow that has a serious shot at 66. Congrats! :greedy: TC

Wonder how you got Proofs in 1894 -- send $1.25 to the Mint (face plus a small handling and postage charge)? I seem to recall that they didn't make up sets, you bought Proofs individually and assembled your own sets...

What a beauty. Can't imagine how it ended up a 64.
This could have been a very interesting "Guess the Grade" thread.

There were enough collectors back then that the mint saw fit to mint a few hundred or in the low four figures of proofs of most coins back then. I wonder how many collectors bought up multiples of proofs because they could?

This is my first proof Morgan, and I was proud of myself in my evaluation of it. It may have been an impulse buy, but what I saw was original, uncleaned, subtle colors, free of major marks, cameo effect, PCGS approval, and potential for a better given grade in the future. I'm pumped to own this beast!

I personally don't think it will be upgraded but is a beast even at a 64 IMO.

Wonder why they graded it a 64 ? What I mean is on coins like this they don't screw up that often . Are there some small hairlines we can't see in the pics . It is a beautiful coin and I hope you do get a 66 on her . But if it does get a 66 I'd suspect it's because the tpgs have been getting looser and looser with their standards , and over the years we adjust our expectations on theirs . Whether knowingly or not . Now if only I could afford a beauty like that .

C-B-D, if you want the name of my contact at Stacks-Bowers, PM me. He has handled 3 consignments without a single problem, and a consignment now will hit the peak of the fall season. Yes, S-B is pricey.
