Not to threadjack, but how did you find a place with a composition scanner, and do they charge for using it? When I buy something questionable from eBay, I'd be happy to spend a few bucks to have someone zap it.
I have developed a great relationship with my local coin shop. They always scan coins for me for free. I have bought and sold a lot with them over the years so we help each other out.
Having never seen any damage like that before...when in doubt, it's fake. The rim damage I guess I can live with, but those cracks on the obverse are just so strange.
