How can they do this? If done, then it becomes a commemorative coin. The abuses are starting again only this time it's the mint, not the promoters, like in the past.........
They like to break their own rules. Just think of the special ASE commemorative sets over the last 3 years. Even the 2009 UHR gold was an "extra" commemorative. Maybe they can add commemoratives that don't profit another entity other than themselves (and the TPGs of course). TC
Since the 4 coin Anniversary Set is not being offered at the ANA, I'll not be going. However, if they change the release date to August 5th, or 6th, or 7th, I'll be a bit upset with them.
What makes you think that the coins in the two coin set will NOT be different from regular issue coins? It is totally possible that these two coins might have "special handling" thereby insuring very high quality coins in the MS69 realm. Regardless, I'll get three sets provided they aren't outrageously priced. One for the Dansco, one for the closet and one for the other closet..............that makes no sense but having more examples to examine won't hurt.
I think that applies toward "Congressionally Approved" commemoratives where profits, at a certain level, go toward some public enterprise. I think this was enacted after they produced a bazillion different Olympic Commemoratives over a two year period of time which really affected overall sales. Could be wrong though.
The difference Greenie is that the mint is getting 100% of the proceeds and not some third party organization.
I'm confused. Regarding this: "Our two-coin clad set goes on sale July 24 and contains two uncirculated quality 2014 Kennedy half-dollars from our facilities in Denver and Philadelphia." Are these any different from the P and D coins they've been selling in rolls since earlier this year? I understand the rest of the coins are different....but are these?
They may well be different in the 2 coin set, but one wouldn’t know from the mint’s statement. Unless the mint clarifies, you may well pay a lot for special packaging with 2 mint set coins. You’d think, at minimum, they’d at least have the original portrait. If they are in fact the same coins in the mint set, the mint will probably remain silent, to sucker us all in. If the coins are different, they’d be fools not to promote them that way. Either way, nothing the mint does will surprise me - maybe shock, but not surprise.
ANA show opens Tuesday at 10AM. Better believe that there will be a mad dash towards the Mint table immediately after ribbon cutting.
The circulating 1976 bicentennial quarter had two dates. Was that considered a commemorative coin? I get a lot of them in circulation.
Great, I've been waiting to hear something on this subject! Now I gotta figure a way to buy something. Of course I am thinking about the gold coin but I don't think my budget will agree with me. I'll be happier to hear the mintage numbers. Until then it's too early to tell if the subject will benefit coin collectors and the Mint or simply the Mint.
The 2 coin set will be available on the web on 7/24 as well as the ANA Show. The gold coin will be released on Tuesday, August 5th at the ANA Show and S/B Available on the web as well.
