  1. I decided not to wait for the official anniversary sets and am now in the process of creating one of my own. :) Enjoy, TC IMG_0496r.jpg IMG_0493r.jpg

How much did you get the PR70 for? I just got mine in the mail today. Purchased on ebay for $49 shipped. Might try to pick up a few more, then sale them when the sets go on sale. People will be bidding through the roof I hope.

I searched the Mint's website and the only 2014 Kennedy halves of any type mentioned are the P and D regular issues in the two roll sets and 200 coin bags. One would think they would have the same information on their website as was released to the numismatic media.

The silver proof sets are not scheduled to go on sale until the end of the month so how did the dealers offering graded silver Kennedy halves get them so early?

  5. @jwitten Mine was a few bucks less than yours, via the same venue. These are quietly selling well on eBay right now. These might do well as people are waiting until 2015 for their official sets to arrive from the US Mint...lol. :D TC

I honestly don't collect or buy kennedy halfs, except for this year. What does a typical year PR70 silver usually sell for?

I don't know that the popularity of the Kennedy Half Dollar has anything to do with the assassination as much as it has to do with the coin itself. Folks just like to collect them because they are readily available, they are large, the early issues have silver and were saved in huge quantities. It's a neat set to put together.

As for the "accented hair" aspect, the coins will NOT have this based upon the rendering provided by the US Mint Gold piece.

No broken serif, no accented hair, no broken ray reverse. That particular design was abandoned.
The profile looks ok as long as they don't muck it up with that phoney dithered cameo effect which wipes out any and all detail.

The 2014 Silver Proof Sets went on sale on 4/29/2014. I have 2 on my desk as I type. The web page states that they will not be available for "shipping" until 6/30/2014.

As far as I know, the only break available for "coin dealers" is a 2%-3% discount on prices if they order the sets by the truckload BUT they have to wait for the same release date as everybody else.

As for the Numismatic Media? They always get this information before anybody else as it's just the way that the US Mint Marketing folks operate. They like to tease us!

Or mislead us. The mint often prospers from "misinformation" published by the media, then later changes the rules, claiming they never said that. There's a reason the mint says little, it's called deceit.

So, how bad will the mint gouge us for these sets? As of this writing, there's $27.76 worth of silver in the 4 coin 90% silver set, how much do you think the mint will charge for this set?

I'm thinking the 4-coin set will be $124.95 or maybe $149.95

and I think the gold will be $1149.95 if gold prices stay where they are now.

edited to add that the aftermarket value will be dependent on the total mintage and household order limits.

If there is an unlimited mintage and large per house order limit, then there will be virtually no aftermarket. Just look at the 2012 eagle sets for reference.

If a large or unlimited mintage, but low household order limit, then there will be some ability to flip to dealers needing large quantities in the short run.

But if it's the perfect storm of a low mintage and a low order limit, then the coins will go for moon money in the aftermarket. We even saw that happen even when there was an extremely high order limit on the HOF coins... but prices have been coming down a bit lately. Will be even greater extremes if they limit from 1-5 per household and cap the mintage (the 2011 eagle sets were sort of an example of that)

Yep, I wouldn’t put it past the mint to set new records for gouging on these sets. If that’s the case and mintages are high or unlimited, I’ll save my money for more 5oz P-Mint AtB’s.

I'll likely buy the 4 coin silver set and maybe the gold proof. I'll be in Canada on vacation during the show (as always), so I won't have a chance to buy the gold proof that way, but will have to rely on the internet.

I'd be more interested in a 15 piece silver set of all the mistresses he kept while in the white house!!!

I am excited but little ol me will not be able to order them as the dealers will get first dibs. I will be stuck online with 'Server Busy' crap.

When the US Mint introduced the reverse proof Buffalo at the ANA last year and then the HOF commems in Baltimore earlier this year they also created havoc with many dealers and the TPGs. The releases meant long lines of folks who were standing around for hours and who were not necessarily going to be walking the floor afterward while the TPGs were slammed with submissions and made everyone who generally supports the TPGs while at a major show (the dealers) wait as many novice submitters spent valuable time being walked through their submissions.

No doubt some folks took their profits and plowed them back into the hobby by purchasing items at the show, but I spoke to precious few who took this strategy.

  17. Same here. Not sure what these usually go for, but it likely depends on the year. I know the 2012 PF70 silver, for example, sells at a huge premium. I think getting yours under $50 shipped is an excellent deal given what I have seen for completed sales on eBay for these so far. TC

I will also say it depends on mintage. The silver and clad ones are a given.

PS - ANA members get in half hour early vs. non members. Better sign up boys and girls.

This is awesome as I'm only a 100 miles from there. I hope I can buy them all then have them graded there, a boy can dream.

    1. There are no real "Key" dates to the series; all are affordable in MS60 condition or higher.

    2. You can collect / build your collection to what ever level you desire by adding varieties and errors.
