Very nice! I'm up in Ballston Spa. I picked up a Ballston Spa National Bank (still around and kicking) Type II $ 10 Nat a few months back. Raw and no better than a VF, but still pretty cool.
Greene county was my area I have a few more National note in my family collection. My uncle Teo Macero lived up your way
The one National Bank that I collect from existed from 1889 until 2011 when it was taken over by a big city, out of state bank. Wish it was still around
Tanner bank was established in 1820 before then was Henry Tanner. Bank of Greene county . 1890 great greatgrand pa Miller became owner. Their three story how he got the bank. I am not sure what one my family has is sure what one my family has is fact. I am the only one still a live.
Nationals sort of intimidate me. It's such a wide ranging subset of both large and small size notes, even collecting from just one state, village, town, or even bank can be a lifelong endeavor. That being said, I'm happy owning a few examples, but jeez... so many low population notes.
You described the challenge of it - which is what invites me to pursuing the one place I do, where I own most of the notes from, and now a brown back from the bank's opening in 1889 has come up for auction and I DON'T have the necessary funds to buy it - unless I sell a kid or something.
Hes talking about jokingly selling a kid, or a kidney, or a left arm on the black market, cause you know its a joke when people approach something super expensive that they cant realistically (or necessarily afford) at the moment, but still would like to own the item. It kind of means you have to give up something really close and personal to you to be able to afford the item in question. Nothing more than an innocent phrase meaning that obsolete brown back note was a little bit too expensive. The next poster just followed up the joke saying that he hears there is good money in selling kids or kidneys. Just a little fun Jello, nothing harmful at all.
I would be concerned about people selling kids too Jello.....this isnt the appropriate forum for that. We keep those transaction limited to the B/S/T forum.............
But speaking of Nationals and Obsoletes and things like that. I just acquired a very cool set of bills from my home town. They are obsolete notes from The Commerce Bank at New Bern North Carolina. Really cool considering New Bern was the first Capital of NC and I didnt even think about tracking down some of the old town money.
My favorite thing about these notes besides the fact that they are carrying the name of the town I was born in, but they also have some beautiful depictions on them. I am a waterman if ever there was one. I love all things dealing with the ocean and marine life, the salt-life life styles, etc. and these notes do a subtly beautiful job at incorporating that nautical theme with the anchors and the over look of the seas in the background images. My only complaint is that I wish I had some better examples.
