Nice article regarding elephants on ancients. http://www.coinweek.com/featured-news/elephants-ancient-coins/
Dang animal racism. Yeah, elephants I would say are one of the more common animals, behind only lions and eagles I would imagine on ancient coins. They are found from Spain and North Africa all the way to Bactria. Rhinos, otoh, are found on TWO, (yes, only two), ancient coins. Both Roman. But, it could be worst. An ape, from what I have read, is on a single, solitary ancient coin. Sorry, I know others are sick of my "anti-rhino" rant by now.
Search "Gallienus zoo". He produced a lot of animal coins and many people collect them as a series. Collecting animals is a pretty common theme in world coins, and somewhat popular for ancients. Steve, TIF, and others have some great animal ancients.
Thanks for the article link. It sure would be neat to own one of those Alexander coins with elephant headdress. Here is a Septimius Severus with elephant reverse. Septimius Severus AR Denarius A.D. 193-211 4.01 gms, 20.2 mm Obv: Laurerate head of Severus right. L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIIII. Rev: Elephant wearing cuirass walking right. MVNIFICENTIA AVG. Grade: gEF pretty much as struck. Well centered with 90% of legends clear. Other: Nice reverse with very clear plaid pattern on elephant. Sear 1766. Don't have the Alexander type, but here are the other two for you: And these are NOT Roman, (stupid article )
Which ones? The three headed elephant coins from the quarter to one baht pieces of around 1910? The elephant left of the half bahts from the 20's, or others? Sorry, I am a thai collector, so I own all of them. Elephants are such a part of Thai culture its no accident the first round Thai coins had them on it. However, they really aren't very ancient. The earliest Thai elephant piece I have, (and the earliest I have ever seen), are on some pieces around 1300-1400 as stamps on some tin/lead pieces of Sukhothai.
I will post them here when I come back from the movies with my girlfriend Jenny. be back in about 3-4 hours. later, Craig.
There are many beautiful elephant coins and then there are these: two Satavahana Gautamiputra Satakarni 78-102 AD Vasisthiputra Sri Puloma 131-159 AD Two lead Ikshvakus left 227-306 AD right c.300 AD ID's and dates from the sellers. Maybe correct?
