Skunked in San Diego

I grew up and was stationed in the San Diego area for many years. I recently made a trip down there after being away for about a year and figured I would try my luck at sorting while I was there.

Coin-roll hunting has been a recent thing for me (I've only been doing it for the past three-four years now and I have never done it in the San Diego area).

I thought it would be a good idea to hit some of the smaller town banks in the outskirts of San Diego so I went up to the Escondido, Fallbrook, and Temecula areas, down to Chula Vista, over to San Marcos, La Jolla, and over to the Oceanside area (my old stomping grounds) to order coins.

The first $15,000 worth of halves netted me a lonely two 40% halves and my second trip which was an additional $10,000 yielded NO silver halves.

Thank goodness I was also looking for proofs and other cherry picking coins or it would have been a real waste of a weekend of sorting.

Has anybody else tried this area? Success/Failure? Any better luck with 25 cent, 10 cent, 5 cent pieces?

About 7-8 years ago when the price of silver began to slowly rise, more and more people started searching rolls, and the higher the price of silver went, the more people who joined those ranks. This went on for so long that most silver quarters and halves have been reclaimed from circulation. The quarter rolls are the easiest for searches because you can immediately spot the silver coins through the shrink-wrap. Yes, there are those occasions when someone can get lucky because some depositor dumped their small hoard into their bank account to make ends meet, but these successes are few and far between. It doesn't surprise me that you only netted two 40%'ers out of $25K worth of half dollars.

You are usually, in my personal experience, better off getting halves from rural areas rather than large metros. Large metros usually have a number of roll searchers already going, so the picing will be slim. My best results were always when I scored bags from rural areas, (though many would argue all of Iowas is a rural area). Back in the 90's I would get 5-10 silver and 20-30 40% per bag in Des Moines. I got a bag from a town of 15,000 though that had about 50 silver halves, (even quite a few WL's), and maybe 150 40%. Best bag ever.

Now, this was around 92, so I know those kind of bags are gone, but the principla still holds I believe. Rural areas you have a better chance of scoring some better stuff.

I live in podunk MT. and it's no better for halves. Marked coins/rolls, dump banks, etc. from previuos crh's. I'm actually going out of state today to pick up 2 boxes I ordered last week. CRH's are everywhere and it's about dried up. This will most likely be my last go-round unless I get lucky......

You know what is funny? You know who the first Roll searcher was? I just heard this a year or so ago. The US Government. In the late 60's, the exact same time they were telling everyone its not worthwhile to keep pre-65 coins, you should spend them, etc. they sorted out and melted BILLIONS of them. This is where the so called "national strategic stockpile" of silver came from. A few years later they invented ASE's to sell BACK to collectors the exact same silver they took out of circulation. :(

When I first started sorting up here I found about $150 fv in 90% halves and $500 fv in 40%.

I was presumably one of the only people doing it on a large scale at the time and it really paid off. I also found one bank that didn't order them from the local reserve branch and had tremendous luck with their orders. I ordered three $500 boxes and on the last box - I kid you not - there were probably 3-4 coins per roll.

I miss those days...it gave me a great start to my collection.
