Any updates from anyone on this? Did the mint get approval for a 24k coin?

What's the consensus on these? Will these have the same "flip" potential as the HOF coins? Maybe a little less?

(still shaking my head about missing the huge profits to have been made... and I was at the Baltimore Expo...)

If they are sold like the ASE sets (i.e. no limit for 30 days), not much short term potential, many will be sold.

Yeah, moderns are a terrible investment, LOL.

I wouldn't bet on any profit for these........whenever they come out.
It seems like after a hugely popular coin is released (HOFs in this case), the next "big thing" is always over bought, over produced, over flipped.
BUT, I'll put my pennies together and buy it still.

Since I have a collection of all the JFK halves, I'll be buying one, but I have no plans to buy additional ones to flip.

Zero interest in this because as far as I've been able to tell, there's not going to be anything significantly special about the coins besides the package they come in.

The gold version may have been something (that I probably wouldn't have been able to afford anyway lol...) but it looks like that fell through anyway.

I have my 2014P, 2014D, and 2014S (in the clad proof set); those will be the only Kennedys I'm buying this year.

I gave up on Mint gimmicks a long time ago. This seems like a worse waste of money than the silver limited edition sets.

Where have you seen that the gold fell through?

I haven't seen that myself, but I hope he's right.

Why would you not want the gold? I do not collect JFKs, but would be interested in that one.

Would rather not spend so much on one coin just because of the metal content.

It was only ever suggested, but Congress never approved it (as far as I can tell, it never even came up for a vote) and it would be too late to do so by the end of this year, which would kind of be bedsides the point if it wasn't the 50th anniversary anymore.

Maybe they'll do something special for Kennedy halves in 2017 (which will be the 100th anniversary of JFK's birth).

BTW more to the point, everyone in this thread is making a big deal about some supposed JFK half set, but I can't find anything on the Mint's site that even mentions such a thing. Their making a big deal about 2014 being the 50th anniversary of the JFK half, but when you click on the link to order anything, it just takes you to where you can buy bags and rolls of the ordinary 2014 half dollar, like you could in any year. Nothing on the product schedule mentions anything special about 2014 halves at all. Am I missing something here?

Um, what 50th Anniversary set? Nothing on the Mint's website mentions any such thing, at all. Constant searching on the internet reveals no mention of any such thing; it's either links to the Mint's website or random things private mints have thrown together.

I keep seeing mentions that "the mint is planning something" but nothing that mentions specifically what (they mention the supposed gold coin that looks like it will never materialize, but nothing in official Mint literature specifies any actual set or anything different you couldn't get any other year).

So what is this supposed set everyone is talking about? Everyone's talking about it but the Mint it seems lol... am I missing something? Or is everyone else?

There has never been any official announcement about this set. There was a Coin Week article a year ago that discussed the possibility of such a set and apparently there were some surveys sent out. The mint was advertising the "50th Anniversary" on their site...but never made any mention of a specific product to commemorate it. It's all been rumors and speculation.

Ok OK lol, I thought it was just me, that somehow managed to miss something that the entire rest of the coin collecting community heard about but I didn't.

So why is such a big deal being made about products never even mentioned by the Mint as existing? Everything I can glean from the Mint's site is that they're making a big deal about the 50th Anniversary, but if you click on the "buy now" button it just takes you to where you can buy bags and rolls of 2014 JFK halves, like you could in any year.

I heard the gold coin rumors myself but never got the impression that it ever got past the suggestion stage, much less get sent for any kind of approval to mint such a thing.

So why all this hubbub about a rumor lol?

My guess is they are trying to capitalize on the "hype" to sell more rolls. Remember, they are a for profit group...and thus are in the business to make money.

Too expensive for one, and even if I could afford such as thing, I'm not interested in coins that commemorate other coins (coin-ception lol...). To me that's just getting a little silly. My gold coin budget is like 1 or 2 a year and don't want to spend it on something that's essentially the Mint patting itself on the back when there's so many classic gold coins I could get instead for only slightly more money.

I personally don't have an issue with the cost...but I do agree that the idea of commemorating a coin is a little dumb. That is one of the reasons why I have questioned if this set will ever happen...we have never created a commemorative for the anniversary of a coin series. Remember, this coin was created to honor Kennedy following his death...creating a 50th anniversary commemorative is almost like commemorating his assassination. It makes a whole lot more sense to me to create such a commemorative in 2017...on the 100th anniversary of his birth.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

I predict that someone, somewhere, will buy up a pile of bags of half dollars, have them plated with 24k gold and sell them as a collectible with great investment potential.

Isn't the 25th anniversary reverse proof kind of a commemorative of a normal silver eagle?

They have made commemorative coins for the anniversary of George Washington's death and FDR's death, btw (which are kind of creepy too IMO, but at least they died of natural causes). If you're talking about marking the anniversary of an assassination... they've done that too: the 1998 RFK dollar was issued to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Robert Kennedy's death. (I refuse to own that one; besides seeming morbid, I just don't like the design of it.)

Even if cost were not a factor I don't think I'd have any interest in a coin commemorating another coin; it just seems silly to even make such a thing (and the fact that the coin it's honoring is essentially honoring JFK after his death does make it seem a tad morbid).

I'd love for them to do something in 2017 though. Possibly altering the JFK half design itself, with a permanent change to the series taking effect in 2018, like they've done for the Lincoln cent and Jefferson nickel.

P.S. The mint sort of "commemorated" a coin before; the 1996-W dime was minted essentially to mark the 50th anniversary of the FDR dime. However, that was a lot more low-key and a minor alteration to an existing regular issue rather than a full-blown commemorative.

Oh yeah and this, sort of. But again that's really just an alteration to already existing coin series rather than a commemorative in its own right.
