A few weeks back you could get one in the $800 range ungraded. Now it looks like it is the $1,100 range. Any thoughts if this holds or if the people getting their coins from the mint later in the summer will flood the market. I am really surprised to see it at this level. I never got them to sell but it is really hard to fight the urge when it is approaching 3 times cost.
There were 32,026 proofs and 17,974 uncirculated sold. I'm thinking that flippers will saturate the market for a while and when the market dries up, the price of the uncirculated will reach for the moon. I'm holding my uncirculated golds until next year.
Hmm. If they do, they will be bucking a VERY strong trend though, right? Don't most of these issues pop up to their highest price right after issue, just to slowly fade down and away as time passes? I haven't heard of very many new mint issues worth more 5 years down the line than in the first couple of months. Some pucks went that way, and of course the Jackie Robinson, but haven't they been pretty rare? Not saying it won't happen, but it will have some strong headwinds. I am not hating on the coin, I was actually going to order a gold unc one, but had to be traveling for work when they sold them.
They will probably remain "hot" until the next "hot" itme comes out then all the interest will be on it and the prices will probably drop.
But these are different. The shape obviously, first. Most type collectors will want one just because of that even if their only other Commemorstive is an 1892 Columbian. If the Mint keeps making untraditional coins, there will be collectors who will collect those - I'm calling that Neonumia fir the moment, but whatever it gets called, they will want these because they are the first. Then we have baseball people who may want one and the autographed versions for some. And then, just because it is odd, we will have people who don't collect at all and don't care about baseball, but they want one of these "just because". And lastly, real collectors and semi-real investors. That all could be enough to keep the pot bubbling, if not boiling.
I just bagged more 4 unc for $3600. They'll settled well above that mark. Most are 70s anyhow. The silver coins will be the winners IMO
The mint has reportedly started shipping out more of the gold in the last couple of days. Watch Ebay and see what the price does, as they should be hitting it here soon.
Ouch. You just made every hair on the back of my head stand up. Anytime someone says "this time its different" almost always means its not. No sense arguing though, we will see in a few years, especialy after the next "hot" thing like Condor said. Again, I am not hating on the coin, I was going to order one, and I am not saying over issue price people will not do fine. I would simply be worried about buying into the newly released, hyped prices because I have simply seen this pattern a LOT.
I actually have to agree with his statement of it's different this time. I'm surprised this viewpoint hasn't been brought up but I was quite put off by the HOF coins. This isn't only due to my innate dislike of baseball but I feel the US mint is starting to follow in the lines of some of the other mints such as the Niue mint that produces more novelties than coins. Although to be fair I am very conservative. I don't believe proper coins should be oddly shaped, colored, embedded with crystals and so on. I have no idea of the relative demand of these but if I were to guess I'd have to say they are just a fad
The UNC gold could be a real winner. The crossover to baseball collectors leads to a huge market for these coins. Real curious what people say at the Long Beach show about them. I will have a few in my case. Most of mine are posted in the auction section here.
I wouldn't buy in now either. But I did buy from the Mint and I won't be flipping unless I really need the money.
The mintage report is: UNC - 137,909 PRF - 262,091 http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint/cumulativeSalesStatistics/
The HOF silver proof coins are dropping in market value quickly. A couple of weeks ago they were $200/each. They are now down to about $125/each. I'm guessing that they'll settle at about $75/each.
I see MS69's in that range, but checking eBay just now the PCGS 70's are still well over $200.00 and the signed ones, first pitch etc. are much more. Am I not seeing something?
Pf 69 either NGC or PCGS, are in the 125.00 area, Unslabed proof in OGP are higher, maybe with the thought they may grade at a 70. With the large amount of clad to either be bought or shipped, the baseball fan will have plenty to buy in the future. Bullion buyers have tons of other options at a much lower price. 400,000 silver 1.00 coins, need a lot of buyers for the price to hold up. 6 bits seems realistic, 70 coins in the 150.00 area.
