OK Lincoln cent experts. Is this a fake? If so what is the giveaway? I think the D just doesn't look right. Not boxed enough. I also can't locate the diagnostic die crack from the third fold of his shirt leading to the rim. Could it be an S modified to look like a D? Added mint mark? Please offer your opinions. Thanks.
It's stretching things at this photo size/resolution, but I can almost imagine that that feature along the top of the D is a remnant from the upper curve of an S.
Here is a link to what another member posted about 1914-D mintmark positions. >> http://www.cointalk.com/threads/1914-d-genuine-wheat-cent.244164/#post-1883910
Thanks for the link. Actually if I'm interpreting BooksB4Coins post in that thread correctly, this coin might be authentic. It looks like die #2 which had extended seriphs on the D.
I hate to be "that guy" but I don't think this matches die 2. Compared side by side, the shape and orientation appear very different. Plus, it almost looks like there is some discoloring around the mint mark which could be indicative of an added mint mark. I'm no Lincoln expert, but I certainly see some red flags. My gut is saying this is not authentic.
My gut said no but RLM's overlays say something different. The MM just doesn't look quite right but it may have suffered a hit. Looks like a fine grade, worth sending in to PCGS IMO.
