I'd just take a look at the edge and see if there is any copper showing. Compare it to any normal post 64 quarter to get an idea.

It makes me laugh when people just say "it's not silver". It's either you just can't handle that someone else might find a '65 silver or you have some special powers to be able to tell from this picture. lol

I believe it's possible that it's silver. I believe I had one as a kid (through high school). I kept it, but now I'm not sure where it is, could be at my parents' house. Definitely was a 1965, was in nice condition (circulated, but in great shape), and had the distinct silver sound when dropped on a table. Nothing like a clad quarter. No distinct clad mark on the edge. Sounded like an actual silver quarter when dropped (had a silver one to compare it to). So I believe it's possible. After reading the replies, makes me wish I could find the one I had found, it may be worth some money!

Yeah I don't think the dog became a coin dispenser. Funny. If I ever do find it I'll be sure to check it out and let you know. God knows what my mom may have done with it...probably bought a soda with it!

Don't worry, I've found one too and I don't think that you're crazy. mine is in SLIGHTLY better condition (in that it's a complete circle), but not by much. It has the date of 1965 but makes a different sound when dropped on marble and feels smoother and softer than modern quarters like silver coins do. The only thing I don't have going for me is that i cant see the edges. Where modern quarters look 1/2 copper and 1/2 silver (color) where the grooves are on the side of the coin, mine is too dirty to see. Just try some of those methods, but if you clean it, have someone professionally clean it. Do NOT do it yourself if you don't have experience. my hopes are the best of luck to the both of us in that we have rare 1965 printed silver quarters.

Just so you know, the rim is not a reliable way of determining metal content.

There are rumors that some quarters were minted in 90% silver in 1965 by error; I'm not sure if any have actually escaped the mint, though.

The coin in the picture does not look to be silver though. Pictures of the edge would make it easier to tell (or a weight of the coin).

Sometimes the core (copper) just gets sealed in by the outer cladding layers (copper/nickel) and the copper doesn't show through; just because you can't see the copper core isn't proof by itself that it's actually silver.

Best way to judge is by the weight. A 90% silver quarter weighs about 6.25 grams; a clad quarter weighs about 5.67 grams (why Coinstar rejects silver quarters lol; they're too heavy).

There are a few known examples. It's not surprising, the US mint continued to mint silver quarters after 1964...they were just all dated 1964.

I checked, they are a few (about 25 or so last I checked) known silver quarters dated 1965, made in error (wrong planchet error). They exist, but they're rare. The picture does not look like one though.

I agree...I have no reason to think this is silver. I was just saying there are some known to exist.
