The store opened yesterday and I'm not impressed.

First, very little there and most of it higher priced items. Their seller input matrix is not tuned for coins, which means you see listings like "1795 No Mint Mark Silver Dollar Dollar NGC10, Collectible - Like New" - yeah, really, just like that, "Dollar Dollar" and all.

I don't know why some people think Amazon is so great. They really are not. Anyone who subscribes to their Prime TV service knows how glitchy their software can be and how little they care. My bet is that this will turn out just like their auction attempt in 1999 - a mass exodus by sellers.

It seems to be a rather commom theme in business. They become full of themselves and stray from their roots, spreading themselves all over the map. Then when they get their butts kicked into the ground they start yelping about "getting back to basics."

I do buy many things from Amazon - but I doubt I'll be buying coins.

Yeah, I will stick to books. I am somewhat Luddite in that I prefer books over electronic readers etc. Their media sucks, I have bought music on there before only to have it disappear once I download it to my PC.

A quick look at the half cents showed mostly slabbed late dates and no real bargains. I did notice that problem coins weren't noted as "... details" in the listing headings. The unslabbed half cents were overgraded in addition to being overpriced.

It's really just a play against eBay. It's not Amazon selling coins. You, I or anyone else can setup shop and sell coins on Amazon just like we can on eBay. IMHO, it's about time someone is going to give eBay a run for the money, some competition can only help the overall industry.

Where should I look for a collectible coin set containing rare coins made of precious metal?

I think for individual sellers to be prime eligible, you have to ship your items to Amazon and they store them in the warehouse till they're purchased. I believe there is an extra fee for that too, that the seller pays.

I recognized a lot of the sellers - looks like they all started with a small selection of coins. Did not really price compare on some of them.
