Would you pay $400 for this MS66 Morgan?

I'm debating whether to buy this coin. When the time comes to sell, I don't want to sell the coin for less than I paid. So my question is, would you pay $400 for this coin?

Well, as much as no one would wish to intentionally lose money, you WILL LOSE MONEY in this hobby. Even if you sell for what you paid, you just lost money because of time value of money.

So, collect what you love and can afford. Would owning this common date morgan in slightly better grade give you $400 of pleasure? If it does, then buy it. It is a very nice morgan, semi-PL, and nice blast white.

If you're worried about losing money down the line, don't buy it.

Coins give me pleasure if they are nice and if I get them for a fair price. So I am trying to find out if it is a fair price by asking other people's opinions.

I wouldn't because of the cloudiness in the fields . But if you've seen it in hand it's all up to you .

I'm worried about losing money with every item I buy. I am simply trying to find out if $400 is a fair price by asking for other people's opinions.

Have you tried searching HA for realized prices?

Fair enough sir. I was just commenting on your "I do not want to lose money" statement.

Personally, the eye appeal does not scream 66 to me, but that is just a personal opinion. Your avatar is a gorgeous coin, I guess to me that is what a CAC66 or 67 would look like in my mind. Again, just personally, this 1880 might technically be a 66 but first impression eye appeal does not lead me to assume that. At first glance it looks more like a 64 or 65.

After hearing your opinion, I decided I'll pass on this one. If there weren't so many hits in the field I would buy it, but I feel it's a 65. I think the eye appeal is great on this coin because of its cameo look.
I can't remember the exact grade of the coin in my avatar pic, as I took it from Google Images, but it must be a very high grade DCAM Proof.

Lol, don't just listen to me, ask others who actually know something! I am not into US coins much anymore, but used to be. Morgandude, Cpm9ball, Doug, Matt, anyone but just me. :)

I agree with passing on this one. I think it's an average MS66 at best. 1880-S is considered the best struck and preserved coin in the whole Morgan series. That are literally tons of wonderful examples including DMPL coins that are affordable. With this particular date/MM, you can wait until you find a really choice example.

As for a "fair" price, I would look at HA completed auctions. I don't think you will ever make a profit on this type of coin when buying at full retail...but it you know what the coin normally sells for you stand a better chance of not overpaying the current market value. If the market drops (which is does from time to time) you will lose money. That's just the way it is. It's unpredictable.

I usually look at HA completed auctions to price my coins, but I thought that this coin had above average eye appeal which is why I wanted other opinions on the price. Since coins with nice eye appeal typically sell for more, I was wondering how much more this one was worth. I like the eye appeal of the coin, and would buy it if it were graded 65 and priced fairly. I'm definitely going to pass on this one.

Looks alot like an CAC MS66 Morgan I bought. The only coin I've ever returned.

I don't love the scratch by her nose is an ok coin but I feel there's better for the money not seeing in hand feels more like a mid line 65 to me you can find a 66 that's nearly mark free if you look especially in 1880-81-s

I think it is reasonable to find this in a 66. The only TINY mark on her face is on the tip of her nose, and it isn't that noticeable. Overall, it is almost devoid of bag marks on her face, and the only major mark in the left obverse field is not that bad. I'm guessing that CAC gave this a beanie because it is very close to PL/DMPL, not because of the grade, and photos of these coins will typically look like this. I have an 1880-S PCGS MS65DMPL that is knock-down gorgeous in hand, but photos don't represent this. If you look at many of the DMPL Morgan photos that have been posted by Blu62Vette, you will see similar appearances.

I'm not a big fan of the chatter on her face and neck. I enjoy the PL look, but I'm sure I could find a cleaner piece for the same price.

I think you could...especially with this date. They are not hard to find. The 1880-S especially...but also the 1881-S.

If I were in the market for a PL Morgan to add to my private collection I'd stay far away from this coin. I don't like the way it looks. Remember to buy the coin. Not the plastic holder and little green sticker. A better one will turn up someday. just be patient and you will attract the coin you most desire.
